Some printers self-clean every so often regardless of whether they have printed anything or not, just based on how long they have been switched on.

If you leave it for long periods of time in standby it may be worth trying turning it off instead. It may be a pain waiting for it to initiate each time you want to print, but it could save a lot of ink.

I have a Brother all-in-one printer that does the same. When I Googled it, I discovered Brothers are notorious for it and, by the way, after so many clean cycles refuse to print again until they have been serviced ! Fortuenely Googling gives work-arounds for this !

Ways to avoid getting clogged nozzles on your epson printers.

Three common ways that the printhead on Epson inkjet printers clog up.
1. Generic Ink is used. The problem with generic ink, is not only the chemical composition is different; thus not getting the best quality prints, but the viscosity. I have 2 different types of issues. If the ink is too thin, then the ink will seep through the casing and burn the printhead board. If the ink is too thick, it will start to build up in the tubes of the printhead until it clogs up the tube. It very similar to cholesterol. The more greasy foods you eat, the smaller the passage way in the arteries become. Once the nozzle clogs up, the ink can not flow anymore, dries up and no ink comes out.

2. Not using the printer a long time. If you don't use your printer more than 3 weeks (+/- a week or so), there is a good chance the ink in the printhead will dry up. Similar to milk in the fridge. I am sure you dont want to drink milk thats been in the fridge for more than a month. Usually the ink near the nozzles dry and do not allow the printhead to spit out the ink.

3. Lastly, we see printers with clogged printhead when users print big jobs just after the printer reports low ink. When this happens, the ink in the resovoire (sp?) will empty and then air will be sucked into the nozzles. As soon as oxygen and the ink mix, the process of drying ink begins to form. Air pockets and dried up ink stop the process of flow to the paper.

The only option usually is to take it to a service center, they will inject into the nozzles a type of acid that eats up the dried up ink. It works about 65-70% of the time. Also some of the liquid is put into the cleaning station that goes below the printhead when it is parked.

thank you

Need to reset ink on artisan 800

There is an auto maintenance option in the maintenance settings on the printer- this should save you some ink. Also use Epson 791 to 796 cartridges as they store more ink.
