Western Digitial Passport Sync Software

WARNING: Do not think that theyourWD Passport, using the WD Sync software, is a backup drive; it is NOT !

As per the documentation with this device:
"synchronization software is intended to synchronize the data from a computer to the drive (WD Passport) and SHOULD NOT be used as backup software. To use this software properly, we advise that you do not wipe or
erase the data from the internal hard drive (computer) and resynchronize, as this will cause the data that WD Sync stored to the Passport to be deleted."

This is why you are hearing so many people saying that they are deleting the WD Sync software, reformatting, and using the WC Passport as a true backup drive where you can actually see the files that you are backing up, rather
than a bunch of unrecognizable sync files that likely don't have all the files that you thought you "backed up".

Hello, I would like to back up all my data on my current drive which is a 160 GB but overwrite what I already have. What is the process.

Open "My Computer".
Right-click the icon for the Passport.
Choose 'Format'.
Choose 'Quick-format'.
In a very-few seconds, _ALL_ the files on the Passport will be deleted, and the Passport will be 100% "empty".

Then, do a backup from your 'C:' drive to your Passport.

I have a mac Book Pro and have been backing up my photos to a WD Passport external hard drive for several months now. This morning the Passport did not even show up in the finder window. Its' Smartware...

Try plugging into another computer and if that works save all your data then format and try back on your own computer. If this doesnt work start to look into data recovery software. I use 1 called GDB (Get Data Back) which will read a lot of drives information when operating systems wont. Good luck from Scott

We are trying to load data files from old computer system to new. Had Passport hooked up to old computer for two weeks. How do we get the files off Passport and onto the new system?

Hi,
Use the passport to transfer the files, but DO NOT USE THE Passport SYNCHRONIZING software. The Passport will keep a snapshot of the old computer and when hooked up to the new one it will compare it to the snapshot it has stored and, not recognizing it, will ask you to reinitialize the profile, erasing everything in the process. ( At least that is what happened to me everytime I changed something in my computer: new partition or some other thing)

The pedestrian procedure
  1. Hook up the Passport to the old computer.
  2. Copy the data from the old computer and paste it onto the Passport, preferably in a folder. (Drag and drop, Copy Paste)
  3. Safely remove the Passport and hook it up to the new computer.
  4. Open the Windows explorer, travel to the Passport, locate the data folder you created before.
  5. Point to it with the mouse cursor, right-click and select Copy.
  6. Go to the new computer hard drive and paste the data folder on c: or some other folder.
Hope it helps.

My computer completely doesnt see my WD Passport 320gb

Hi,

Try to use another USB port. Verify hardware status from Device Manager. Try to Uninstall your Passport device from Device Manager and reboot your system.

Just remember to take your time and don't get nervous working on the computer. Please report back to the thread the results of your work.

I don't know how to check the files on my WD passport. I'm looking just for pictures and itunes. Can you tell me how this is done?

you plug the drive into a usb port.... if it doesn't automatically pop up to allow you to access the drive... go to my computer (or computer on vista) and go in there... it should appear as another drive. double click and you are in the drive.

Can I use my passport essential 2.0 to backup my work computer as well as my home computer?

You can use your WD Passport to sychronize data on multiple computers, you just need to set up the other computer name (e.g. "Work computer")using the software.
