Question about Poulan 42-Inch Steel Deck 17.5 HP Briggs & Stratton I/C Engine With 6 Speed
It sounds like a valve timing problem. The valves need adjusting. This is a simple procedure, I assume it is a one cylinder, but the sequence is the same, the piston must be at top dead center, plug out to see this, and the valve cover off. Then check the gap between the valve stem and the rocker arms. The gap should be exact as per the instructions in your manual, or google the engine size and ask for the gap. Lets say the intake is 0.007 inches, you will need a feeler gauge and set the gaps. This does make a huge difference in your cranking ability because right now, from your description, you are cranking against compression as the valve timing is off. I have done this before and it works like a charm, like you have a new motor afterwards.

Let go to the basic your engine need fuel and spark to turn the engine on. Here is to check if you have spark and fuel spraying into combustion chamber. 1- After several cranks, take off a spark plug. 2- Inspect it to see - If it is wet, then you have fuel. - If it dry then you have no fuel. Here is a problem 3- When the spark plug is out, touch it to the engine chassis, then have a helper to start the engine, mean while you look at the spark plug to see if it spark. If there is not then here is the problem. If you have fuel and sparks then it is impossible to have engine not to turn on, unless you have poor compression ratio. However I still can help you in this scenario.
