Question about Brookstone Air Purifiers
Use some keyboard cleaner ( turn can upside down and spray liquid where insulators emerge from plastic and connect with thin wire) spray both sides top and bottom of the insulators this should remove contaminants and prevent the power from following the contaminantion and short across the small air gap and "crackle"
you could also take the purifier apart and clean by hand

Sounds like the power is arcing, Probably broken porcelain insulators. I wouldn't recommend trying to use it, there is some really high voltage in there. Replace it or send it out for repair.
