Replacing the cartridge should solve the problem, the balancing spool is stuck, replacing it will solve the problem. The valve should look like this http://www.moen.ca/shared/pdf/3170pt.pdf . I have unstuck the spools in the past, soaking it in white vinegar will help to remove build up.

SOURCE: grohe trim pressure balance valve

i looked at it and there might be a press in cap with a screw underneath where the grohe label is. there also may be a set screw around the shoulder of the handle where an allen hex wrench fits to losen its clamp on the stem. also.......some handles just snap on and just pull off with some tugging and wiggling them just right.

SOURCE: moen T2113 shower faucet no hot water

You need to replace the stem. This will not cost you a dime; call MOEN and tell them the issue, with the model number, and they will send the replacement part. Many people don't know that MOEN is guaranteed for life (to the original owner)......another words, say you are the original owner :) They will not ask any questions. Good luck! PS Also works on any MOEN faucets you may have.

I have a moen shower faucet where the water mixture keeps getting hotter with very little cold coming through. the temp must be set nearly all the way to cold to prevent scalding.

Sounds like a pressure-balance shower valve. The pressure balance cylinder is stuck. With water off, remove knob and trim plate. Remove pressure balance cylinder (horizontal). May be hard to get out. Use emory paper to clean up cylinder and smooth it so it moves freely. Reassemble and you'll be happy.

This is taken from the Moen manual. You can download it here:
http://www.moen.com/shared/pdf/instruction_sheets/ins162e.pdf
Balance Spool Maintenance
The precise and instantaneous pressure control illustrated has been
achieved through the balancing spool, which has been manufactured to
exacting tolerances.
During construction or valve installation, foreign material such as solder
flux, pipe cuttings sand, dirt or wood is unavoidably introduced into the
water system. Occasionally, however, rare, these foreign materials can
cause the balancing spool to become stuck temporarily between the
rough-in and trim-out operations. If this happens, it will be apparent at
the trim-out test, in that the valve will deliver only a small trickle of water
or it will deliver only hot or cold water. If this occurs, proceed as follows:
1. Make sure that both the hot and cold water service lines are ON. Also,
make sure that both screwdriver stop-check valves are open. The valve
WILL NOT OPERATE unless both supplies are ON.
2. If the valve still does not function properly, turn off both the hot and
cold supplies and remove the balancing spool, using a wide blade
screwdriver. The inner piston of the balancing spool should shake
back and forth freely. If this is not the case, jar the spool on either
end to remove the foreign material and free the spool. When the
spool is free, replace it; turn ON both water supplies and the valve
will function properly. If you are unable to free the inner piston,
replace the entire spool.

I have a MOEN 4600. The cartridges are plactic. Cold water runs fine but hot water when faucet is put together, only runs for a second then I hear a bit of a clunk then the water only comes out a bit. What...

From Moen's trouble shooting discussion:

Typical Cause

Debris or an obstruction in the balancing spool is causing it not to move freely within its housing. In some models, a lack of pressure feeding the hot and cold will be the cause. The valve also may need to be calibrated.

Solution

First, verify the hot water system in the home is operational.
Second, it is essential to identify the model of your faucet. Please view our Find Your Product section to determine your model.
For Posi-Temp models:
The 1222 cartridge would need to be replaced and the valve body would need to be flushed and cleaned.
For Moentrol models:
Inspect the 1423 balancing spool. This will appear on the front of the valve body, either to the right or above the cartridge. It will look similar to a large flat head screw, and it will be brass in color. A large flat-bladed screwdriver can be used to unscrew the balancing spool from the valve. There will be a spool inside this piece, and it needs to move freely inside of its shell. If the spool does not move freely, then the 1423 balancing spool will need to be replaced.
For ¾" ExactTemp models:
Note: For ½" ExactTemp valves refer to original service manual
  1. Verify the shut off valves (check stop kit) are in the open position. This will be a screw in the center of the check stop kit. These should be unscrewed counter-clockwise.
  2. Check to see if the hot and cold lines are reversed. If the supply lines are accessible, feel the temperature of the pipes. The cold supply must be connected to the cold (right) side of the valve, and the hot supply must be connected to the hot (left) side of the valve. If this is the case, the valve will need to be reinstalled. Note: The cartridge cannot be reversed to correct this issue.
  3. The cartridge would need to be calibrated. Instructions on calibration can be obtained via the ExactTemp Service Manual in our Literature Center.
Note: When calibrated properly, the ExactTemp valve should provide a range of temperature of 80 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
For ioDigital models:
  1. Verify the shut off valves are in the open position. These will vary depending on your ioDigital model.
  2. Remove the valve inlet screens and inspect for any debris. The water supply will need to be shut off, and then the black nut on the inlets can be unscrewed to remove the inlet screens. Rinse off any debris that may be on these screens and reinstall.
For standard valve models:
  1. Check to see if there are shut off valves installed with the unit. Verify these valves are opened all the way.
  2. The cartridge (for one-handle faucets) or cartridges (for two-handle faucets) would need to be removed (or replaced) and the valve body would need to be flushed and cleaned.

If you pull the trim off of the valve you will find the balancing caulk it is 1 inch diameter slotted screw. Unscew that and shake it or tap it on something until it rattles. then reinstall.

Stem Valve is frozen on my 3175 Legend.

Here is a possible solution for you. First go out and buy a Moen cartridge puller tool like this:

5b0f4de.jpg

Next follow these steps:

  1. Turn off the water to the valve.
  2. Install puller and rotate cartridge several times.
  3. Gently pull on cartridge while slowly turning.
This should work. If the center of the valve pulls out continue below with these suggestions:

  1. Remove center piece from tool.
  2. Place the brass feral to the end of the tool as shown.
  3. Insert this part of the tool into the valve all the way as far as it can go.
  4. Turn the tool until you hear a click or tool feels like it turns the valve.
  5. Pull on the tool gently while turning.
This should get the job done.

Also here is some information for you about your valve:

Can't get the cartridge out of moen single knob shower faucet. Took off handle, sleeve and brass clip but could not pull out cartridge. Does it pull out screw out or what?

You have a common problem with Moen cartridges. 1st if the valve is plastic these instructions may not help you, they are for brass valves. If your not afraid to spend a little money you can go to the local hardware store and ask for a Moen cartridge puller. They usually cost between $15-$100 for the good one. Get the one that looks like a tee. (see picture)

e4c2998.jpg
  1. First turn off the water to the valve.
  2. Screw the tool to the valve where the handle would connect to.
  3. Align the slots on the tool to the slots on the valve.
  4. Turn the valve 360 degrees several times.
  5. Pull the valve gently and firmly towards slowly increasing the pressure.
  • At this point the valve will come out and your done.

  • If just the center portion will comes out heres what you do.
  1. Remove the center portion of the valve from your tool.
  2. You will notice at the end of the tool handle is a brass ring.
  3. Slide ring down to button and depress button until it is held in place with ring.
  4. Slide this part of the tool with ring into the valve. (ring will not go in valve)
  5. Insert this into the valve all the way you can until you hear a click.
  6. Turn and gently pull until valve comes out.
  • Note: if both of these fail you need to change the valve.
