Incorrect. I had the same problem. They CAN hear you, but you CAN'T hear them. I can bet u that the speakerphone still works and you can hear them than. Your gonna have to do some surgery to the phone. You need a very small philips screwdriver, open the face of the phone, see the 4 corners? Little rubber pieces, take them out. Remove the back of the cover. You will see a "film" above the outer screen. It most likely is raised or not connecting to the "mother board". Make a call to an 800 number with an automated system, so you don't bug anybody. Push down on that film. You should hear people now. I had the same problem and just put a little folded piece of paper to hold down the film over the spot that isn't connecting right, then closed the phone back up. Hope this works for you.

Apparently the headset in the phone itself is broken and needs to be replaced. A mobile phone service technician should be able to do it without much trouble if he has that particular headset.

I can only hear a caller when using the speaker phone otherwise it is like my phone is on mute although they can hear me. Any possible solutions appreciated, not ready to replace just yet.

Hello there,

My dear friend, the problem is simply that the earphone of the bad/ damaged that is why you cannot hear anything on the phone. As long as your caller can hear you but you cannot hear them, then it is confirmed, because, the speaker is on a different side of where the earphone of the phone is.

The solution is just for you to have the earphone of the phone replaced.

But before replacing the earphone of the phone, you can use a bluetooth hands-free temporarily or an external earpiece that you can connect to the phone and be using on the phone temporarily before replacing the earphone of the phone.

Using a bluetooth hands-free or external earpiece is quite cheap and is of easy access.

Hope this was helpful to you.

If it has an earphone jack try to hook up your headset just to get hint if your problem is in the sound output ic. Listen carefully to your headset if there is a sound or none. If you hear a sound then you the trouble is in between the earphone jack or to your speaker. Just test the speaker and you will isolate the problem. How to test the speaker if good, simple got a battery (either AAA,AA,C,D size) then tap the speaker across the battery when you hear a crackling sound then it is good. If you confirm that the speaker is good then the faulty parts is your earphone jack, replacing it will cure the problem. If you don't hear a sound then through your earphone then the trouble is in the output I.C. or some parts around it and you need a technician to isolate the problem.

If you don't have an earphone jack then I've advice you to look for a qualified technician to look for a defective parts on the sound section.
Thanks for using fixya...

its the earpiece of your phone that is faulty. You need to replace it for you to be able to hear with your phone again.

Hard to hear - maybe dust in speaker? How to clear

As you mentioned dust may be one problem. To rectify this go to your nearest Nokia Care center & service the phone.
The problem may also be due to the low earphone volume. Please check your earphone volume to rectify this.
There is also a possibility of minor damage in the earphone unit due to which your not able to hear properly. You have to replace the earphone unit in this case.
