When i enter the text 285 divided by 13 the answer given is 285 over 13. how do i get it to display the answer in for example ??.? form?

Hello,

That is the answer in fraction representation. If you want to convert it to decimals use the [S<->D] key. Every time you press that key the displyed result changes to the other form.

The trick I use is to add up the digits of each number.

1+5+6 = 12, 1+2 = 3

3+9 =12, 1+2 = 3

Now since both numbers add up to 3 or a multiple of 3, they are divisible by 3. (If both added up to 9, both would be divisible by 9).

So let's divide top and bottom by 3.

156 /3 = 52

39/3 = 13

The number 13 is prime, so we cannot reduce it any more. However, 4 x 13 is 52, so we can divide top and bottom by 13.

52/13 = 4

13/13 = 1

Thus, our answer is 4.

This is the longer (and always works version).

We could take 156 / 39 and get 4. We could take 39/39 and get 1 to get our answer of 4/1 or 4, but the numbers are too big for my brain to do that;)

The formula for 45 degree bends is offset" x 1.414 equals the travel distance in inches. Example: to calculate the offset of a line 6 1/4", in other words move the line over. Turm 1/4 into decimal form (1 divided by 4=.25). Calculate: (6.25 x 1.414= 8.8375). To convert the decimal form of .8375 to a fraction multiply it by 16 (16/16=1") example: .8375 x 16=13.4 , 13 is the numerator, 16 is the denominator which gives you a fraction of 13/16". That gives you your travel distance center to center of a 6 1/4" offset= 8 13/16" travel distance. For accuracy in your measurement, you must subtract the fitting allowance (how much space the fittings take up in the measurement) from your overall travel distance. It sounds like a lot of steps, but using this formula gives you dead on accuracy in pipe fitting. If you know your travel distance and wish to find the offset, multiply x .707. Hope this helps.

I don't think there's specific key for this but you can do it this way:

- Divide those 2 numbers for which you want to find gcf
- If you get result as decimal number press keys [2nd][PRB] to display it as fraction
- Also if fraction you get is in form a b/c (ex. 1 2/3) you have to convert it to form d/c (for 1 2/3 that would be 5/3)
- Greatest common factor is then 1st number divided by numerator (or 2nd number divided by denominator)

- You want to find greatest common factor of 30 and 18.
- You divide them: you should get 5/3 (after converting result to fraction of form d/c, as described in steps 2 and 3).
- This means that 30/18=5/3=5x/3x (x is gcf here).
- Now you know that x=30/5=18/3=6 so greatest common factor is 6.

You are not dividing problems, you are dividing number. This said, there is a simple way to ensure that the results of divisions are displayed in decimal form: It consists in putting a decimal mark (decimal point) at the end one integer (whole number)

ex:

3/2. gives 1.5

3./2 gives 1.5

3./2. gives 1.5

Sorry, this might not be much help but apparently the calculator is set in a mode called "base 10". I have never learned logrithms really in school, but did a little for my ACT. I figured that in order to do a problem, you need to divide. EXAMPLE: 8 log 2 = ? would be entered [log] [8] / [log] [2] [EXE] and the answer 3 will be displayed. Not much help, but maybe this will get you in the right direction.

Enter the fraction for example: enter 8/12.

The answer will be .666666

Click the ->Frac button (the first one).

It should come up as Ans->Frac.

Click Enter.

It should now read 2/3 which is 8/12 reduced.

Note: I have a TI-84 Plus Silver Edition, and the TI-84 Plus might not have this function, but that is how I do it on my TI-84 Plus Silver Edition

The answer will be .666666
