Engine stalls when blade is engaged

The engine stalls when I engage the blade and take my foot off the brake. There must be a sensor going bad.

I am sitting on the seat. brake on, but in 1st gear with blade disengaged. If I engage the PTO with the brake on, all is well. The minute I take my foot off the brake, with the PTO engaged it sometimes cuts out and other times runs. If I quickly disengage the PTO the engine resumes. I am not thinking it is the seat sensor, but not sure.

This is a universal comment, not necessarily specific to your machine. There is an "operator presence" switch in the seat. I presume you are sitting on the seat when you engage the blade? To run this machine you MUST depress the "brake" (sensor #1) to start and you must remain on the seat for it to run at all. Sensor #2 is in the seat. Even if the "brake" is set the blade (clutch)must be disengaged for you to dismount and keep the engine running. I presume I'm not telling you anything you don't already know to this point. I'd check the seat sensor. It is generally a simple switch. You can short it out to test, but DON'T LEAVE IT IN THAT CONDITION! The switch is there for your safety and the safety of your children!

I think you have found your trouble. Lift the seat and check the wiring. My Troy Bilt (Old Troy not MTD Troy) tilts forward making the switch and wire accessable.

The best way to check is to run the engine with you on it then lift off the seat and see if the seat sensor is cutting off then put a bag with some weight in it and turn on the engine it should run ok if the sensor is working and lift the back box to see if the sensor works there.. the other cause could be a build up of grass in teh cutter area stopping the blades fron moving this can caus a stall if you get a hose and blast under the cutter guards and make shure the grass shute is clear for the grass to exit this may help to mine cuts out if there is a blockage here and the grass cant get out after it has been cut it builds up at the exit plates.. Hope this works AB

After I had run it out of gas and put some more in, the mower would backfire and die. I finally discovered that my three-tear-old grandson had stuffed an aluminum gardening implement into a space in the frame. The mower worked fin when I took it out....

Blades will not engage

lots of consumer grade lawntractors make the operator hold down on the clutch/brake pedal before it will allow you to engage blade , in fact some even stall the engine if your not doing just this

Why does my rover rancher stall when i go to engage the cutting deck

1>the pressure switch under the seat may be malfunctioning? (it will cause the engine to die immediately when trying to engage the cutting blades because it thinks your not sitting in the seat.
2>dirty or clogged air cleaner element will cause engine to die when engaging cutting blades. This can be tested very easily by removing the air cleaner element and then trying to engage the blades again. If this works then replace air cleaner element immediately before running the engine anymore.
I have personally experienced both of these problems myself more that once.

I agree it is the seat switch. This switch will let you start the mower as long as it is in neutral, the brake is set and the mower blades are not engaged. I think it is just two wires, maybe you can jump them together and see if it runs.

Engage blades makes noises

Sounds like the bearings are going out in one or both of your blade spindles. With the belt off,(and engine, of course) engage the lever on the dash. That will release the blade brake so the blades will be free to turn. Spin each one by hand. It will be easy to tell if the bearings are bad.
