Question about Nikon Coolpix 5400 Digital Camera

1 Answer

"lens error" when i turn the camera on to shoot photos, the display says "lens error".   It sounds as if the lens mechanism is trying to open, but it doesn't move.   Lights keep flashing.  I am able to view pictures I have already taken, but not able to take pictures. I have tried recharging the batteries and replacing them, but it did not fix the camera.

I am experiencing the same problem. Started about a dozen uses ago.  Sounded like a gear was being stripped.  Started getting the lens error message when attempting to zoom.  Quckly the problem progressed to simply the lens freezing when turning on.  Currently the camera is unusable.  I did manage to save my photos but can not use the camera any longer.  I called the local Wolf Camera, they said it would probably cost at least $200 to repair and take 4-6 weeks.  I was better off buying another. Which is what I might do, but I need to get one that works with my lens'.  Bummer.  This was a $500+ product if my mind serves me correctly.

There is definitely a defect in the camera.  If you are lucky enough to still be under warranty Nikon will fix it for free.  Mine wasn't out of warranty so it cost me $150.  The camera works fine now.  My advice is deal directly with Nikon an not the local camera store.  They will inflate the price $50+.  If you go to the NIkon website and dig around you will eventually get to the repair page where you fill out and print a form that you send with the camera for diagnosis.  I found it to be fairly quick.  The turnaround time door to door was about 3 weeks.

This happened to me last month. You can send it to Nikon for a free estimate on repairs. You only pay the shipping and they will ship it back to you if you decide not to fix it for free....only they don't tell you what is wrong with it. I suppose they don't want you to take it somewhere else to have it repaired for less money. It cost me 162.50 for a service B2...150.00 for the lens issue and 12.50 to ship it. Funny - they do charge you to ship it if you pay for them to repair it!!!

Fix zoom error

The lens probably has some dirt or pocket fuzz caught in it. Try spraying around it with a can of compressed air when it is extended. Also spray the lens.

I have a Canon PowerShot A430 camera. When I turn it on, the lens doesn't open and it shuts off. The message on the screen says " Lens error, restart camera." Please advise. Thanks

Hi,

The Lens Error is displayed on the LCD screen when the Lens Mechanism is stuck or when affected by any malfunction. If turning the power on and off again does not resolve the error message, try doing a power reset and Initialize option.
Performing a manual power reset
Turn off the camera.
Remove the battery pack.
Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
Allow the camera to remain without power for 60 seconds.
Reinsert the battery pack.
Turn on the camera.
You can reset the Camera back to factory default by performing the following steps:
Press the power button.
Press and hold the MENU button for more than 5 seconds. Default Settings will get displayed.
Use the arrow buttons to select OK and press the FUNC./SET button. This will reset all the settings back to factory deafult.
This should resolve the issue. If the issue persists, service may be required.

When I open my Canon A570 camera, The lens stuck, and it says on the screen :"lens errror - restart camera". What can I do? Thanks, Nati.

This message ' lens error - restart camera ' is usually shown under the following condition.
An error was detected when the lens was in motion and the power has been automatically turned off. This error can occur while you hold the lens when it is in motion or you operate it in a location with excessive dust or sand in the air.Try turning the power back on, and resume shooting or playback. If this message continues to display it shows a problem with the lens and you have to open and repair it which I would not prefer as it can affect the fine mechanics inside the camera. You can contact the Canon Customer Support Help Desk from the following link. ( http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer?pageKeyCode=requestRepair ).Your valuable feedback would be appreciated if satisfied with my solution.Thank you.

Lens error restart camera I have a point and shoot canon sd750; the lens will not retract and i cannot take any photos nor view photos

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Here are some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for about 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.

Zoom error showing on display screen of my daughters fuji finepix f40fd digital camera. Unable to press button to take photos and when I try to turn camera off the zoom lens goes in and out twice before...

The lens Is trying to close properly but the focus mechanism has a problem, most likely jammed, so the lens cannot correctly close or work properly.
It will need to be opened up and reset.

A460 lens error, restart camera

The following blog outlines some repair options for a lens error. They won't work for all cases, but they're worth a try if the camera's no longer under warranty:

Hi, I researched the Canon site and the E18 message relates to a lens issue. Your lens sounds like it's "jammed" and so the camera is displaying the error message. According to the Canon online support, the error is temporary and should go away the next time you properly turn on the camera. Howevcer, since you say it happens every time, it may be a bigger issue with the lens. There suggestion is to have it inspected by a certified repair person. This is what I got off the Canon site: Issue: Lens will not move and camera may display an E18 or "Lens" error. Solution: Possible solutions for an E18 or Lens Error message PowerShot A410 The "E18" or "Lens" error message indicates an error that involves the lens unit or lens cover. This error may appear where the lens is prevented from properly extending or retracting such as, for example, when pressure is applied to the lens or the area surrounding the lens while handling the camera. The error may also be displayed if the lens unit/camera has been subjected to an external shock, or if a foreign substance (i.e. liquid, sand, dirt) enters the camera. Solution Check the following when you operate the camera to avoid applying pressure to the lens and surrounding area: * Hold the camera so that your fingers do not touch the lens unit when you are shooting. * Make sure the camera is off before the camera is placed back in the case. Exercise caution to ensure that the camera does not accidentally power on while the camera is stored inside the case. If you cannot clear the error code by turning the camera off and then on again, or if the error code is displayed frequently, a camera malfunction may have occurred. Good luck. NewMediaMan
