Shredder works in reverse, not forward. Paper path is clear, no jams. Ready light stays on, but machine ''clicks'' & turns off light when placing paper in shredder. Ideas?

I cannot shred anything. Shredder light is ready. When placing paper in slot, there is a click & it does nothing. It still shows ready but will not shred. If I put it in reverse, blades turn. If I put paper in to shred, blades do not turn, only click. I clean all sensors visible on shredder which were on the underside of the blade unit, but there must be a sensor in the paper slot that I cannot see. Hope this helps clarify problem.

Further info: The problem is the "input" sensor in the paper slot, which I have cleaned to no avail. How do I get to it to replace & where can a replacement be bought?

The condition which must exist for the motor to come in is the motor must have power which you seem to have, it must 'see' the paper ... either a lever switch or an electric eye beam must be broken to turn on and no jam. You say there is no jam ... but that is in reverse. It is possible that your machine runs bacward but cannot because of a jam inside which you may not be able to see from outside. I suggest you unplug the power unit and disassemble the top. Once inside, use a letter opener to clear all the paper in the cutters. You will see the wiring for the switch whether mechanical or electric. You can test the operation of a mechanical switch with an ohm meter if you have one. Do you use shredder oil at all? You may find a broken bearing once inside. It is possible the motor 'racks' out of proper position due to a broken or worn bearing surface. Given the cost of a new machine, I dont think Id go much further to fix your old machine

Dirt on the paper sensor? Blow it out.

SOURCE: Shredder motor seems jammed

The teeth on the plastic gear that turns the massive metal gears that turn the shredder teeth is probably stripped and needs to be replaced, if you can find the part.

SOURCE: Paper Shredder blades do not turn, even though motor is running

the gear inside the shredder must be broken. This is the wheel that connects the motor to the blades. its much cheaper to buy a new one that try to repair this.

SOURCE: NoviTech Paper Shredder will not feed paper forward.

I had the same problem with my Novitech Model: PS-026/B2 only working in reverse but not forward. So I decided to take it apart and see if I could find any loose wires, broken parts etc. Keep in mind I am not a paper shredder mechanic, but I was able to fix it, at least for the time being, and here is how:

1. Unplug the machine, and I mean it. Make sure you unplug the machine before you start any fixin'. Unplug the machine!

2. I unscrewed the 7 screws located at the bottom of the case

3. I carefully separated the cases and made sure I did not allow any tension on the few wires that span the case halves

4. With the can of electronics duster I use for my computer keyboard, I sprayed all of the electric contacts, making sure I did not spray any of the grease at the gears. I poked the straw in all of the switch housings and the motor.

5. If you feel a little adventurous, you can remove the 6 screws that hold the cover and safety switch in place. At this point pay attention to how the safety switch arm is positioned ( take a picture if you have to) so it will be in the correct position during assembly. Remove the cover and look for anything that could be caught in the shredders. Remove any foreign matter with tweezers or needle nose pliers. Replace the safety switch and cover, make sure the switch arm is in the same position before you took it apart.

6. Put the two case halves together making sure there are no wires pinched inbetween. Put the seven screws back where they belong and tighten snugly ( do not over tighten cause you will break the plastic, guaranteed!)

7. Place the machine on the waste bucket and plug it in. And voila the motor should start buzzing and humming like it was brand new.

SOURCE: Paper Shredder blades do not turn, even though motor is running

yes, it's the plastic gear that's shredded in this shredder. the drive gear on the motor is metal, as are the gears attached to blades. between is a single plastic gear which is chewed up the instant resistance is great enough. fabulous engineering. not a difficult fix, but where does one find the replacement part?

How do you clear a paper jam

Hello,
Typically the best way to clear a paper jam in a paper shredder is to run it in reverse then forward repeating this as many times as necessary to remove the jam (sort of the same as rocking a car back & forward to get it out of a mud or snow rut). If that doesn't work then the only option is to take the shredder apart and clear it that way!
Good Luck!

Red light and green light on but motor will not come on

Check the Power Ensure that the shredder top is firmly placed in the shredder basket if the unit will not operate. If the top is not in place the feeder will not work and accept any paper. Make sure it is firmly plugged into the wall outlet and that the outlet is active. Rest the Shredder Let the shredder cool down if the shredder has been running continuously for a long time. It may have overheated and needs to be left in the off position for at least 30 minutes to reset. Verify the basket is empty or not too full as that will cause the shredder to deactivate. Clear Paper Jam Rotate the shredder into "Auto" and reverse to loosen any paper jam that is stopping the gears. Pull out any papers that are sticking out from the shredder feeder. If there is no progress then unplug the shredder and remove the shredder top from the bin. Turn it upside down and use tweezers to free any paper that is blocking the gear. Auto Mode Not Working Select the "Auto" option and feed paper into the center of the feeder tray if the shredder is only working in reverse mode. The sensor is located in the middle of the feeder tray and could be blocked by jammed paper. Use an index card to firmly unblock any paper that could be blocking the sensor.

Jammed it, removed all paper, now it won't start

Your shredder may be jammed with shreds of paper mashed into the mechanism. Access the mechanism and prepare to remove all ground-in residue bit-by-bit.

Paper has wrapped around the cutting blades and is packed in tight. How do I clean this?

    • 1 Unplug the paper shredder. Empty the shreds from the collection bin. Pull as much stuck material as possible from the top and bottom of the shredder blades with pliers.
    • 2 Place the paper shredder back on the collection bin base and plug the shredder back in. Rock the shredding direction back and forth between forward and reverse. Pull on the jammed pieces as the shredder shifts between directions.
    • 3 Run the shredder in reverse continuously once the paper jam is cleared. Make two passes across the cutting blades while drizzling synthetic shredder oil. Switch the direction to forward to run continuously for one minute.
    • 4 Lower two sheets of clean paper into the shredder. The paper removes excess oil, metal fragments and debris from the cutting blades. Blast the blades with compressed air when you notice a build-up of small paper scraps that may cause a jam.

The shredder was paper jammed

Hi,

Ensure the wastebasket is empty then move power switch to the REVERSE position. This will reverse the jammed paper out of the shredder. If shredder jams again, alternate control switch slowly between REVERSE and AUTO (l) positions to attempt to move jammed paper completely through the shredder. If the shredder jams in reverse mode, move the switch to AUTO (l), depress the manual forward button located on the center of the shredder head and allow to run for five seconds. If jam does not clear, move switch to REVERSE again and allow to run for five seconds.

Repeat this process until jam is cleared. If necessary, turn off shredder and use care to grasp the paper and carefully pull out to clear jam. Once cleared, move switch to AUTO (l) to continue shredding. The jamming may be happening because the cutting cylinder needs to be oiled.

Follow instructions to oil your shredder;

To keep your shredder in top condition, the cutting blades need to be oiled every so often (for frequency, please refer to your owner's manual). We recommend using Powershred® Lubricant or a vegetable-based oil (such as corn or canola) in a non-aerosol container with an extension nozzle.

Caution: Never use flammable synthetic oil, petroleum-based, or aerosol lubricants to oil the cutting blades. Some agents may combust, causing serious injury. NEVER USE WD40.

1. Depress and hold the reverse button down.
2. Put the tip of the oil bottle in the paper entry and make one or two sweeps the length of the entry while squeezing the oil bottle.
3. Move the power switch to Auto (I) position, or depress the manual forward button (depending on model of shredder) and allow the blades to run at least three seconds.
4. Move the power switch to Reverse (R) position and allow it to run for at least three seconds.
5. Repeat steps three and four above at least three time.

Regards.

Shredder will run in reverse mode but not in forward/auto. Has not been jammed or overheated.

Unplug the shredder. CAREFULLY clean out the shredding teeth and paper pathway. On some models you can loosen one end and open the paper path for better access. Ther is an acuator arm for a switch at one edge of the paper path and that will get clogged with paper and the arm cannot move to tell shrdder paper paper is in, ready to go. A blaast or two of canned air in the direction of the arm will help too.
The reverse action is ususlly initiated manually and is not affected by switch operation.

My shredder stopped working in the middle of a shred. I have cleaned all shredding from it, but it still refuses to run. Is there a thermo cut off switch, and if so, where?

  • Shut off the shredder. Unplug it and let in cool down for up to one hour. This will work if the shredder has stopped due to excessive use.

  • 2

Check to see if the shredder is jammed. This is the most common cause of shredder problems. Click the power switch to reverse, which should clear a minor jam. If not, set the shredder to auto, and then to reverse again until the jam clears.

  • 3

Clear extremely stubborn paper jams by grabbing the stuck paper and gently pulling it out. If smaller pieces of paper cause the jam, shut off the shredder and unplug it. When it cools down, carefully use a pair of tweezers to remove the paper bits.

  • 4

Determine if the power supply to the shredder is working properly. If the power supply is cold, use an alternative source of electricity for your shredder. If it is warm, there may be a problem with the shredder itself. Call your office machine repair shop or the shredder manufacturer for assistance.

  • 5

Sharpen or oil the blades. Shredder blades need to be oiled on a regular basis to keep your machine in proper working order. Get oil made specifically for shredder blades from an office supply store.

Paper got stuck. machine will not turn on.

First, check that the machine is properly seated on the waste container. There is a switch that prevents the shredder's operating if it isn't properly seated. Will your "ready" indicator light up? If the machine will not turn on at all, try something else in the outlet the shredder is plugged into. If there is no power to the outlet, you probably tripped the breaker. Reset it and proceed as follows. Turn your switch to "off". Unplug the shredder and flip the shredding head upside-down on a stable surface. Remove anything that was previously hanging down. Gently remove stuck stuff, keeping your hands in a safe position. Place the shredder head back on the waste container and plug it in. Most all shredders have a reverse on them for just this occasion. Work the machine reverse and forward, until it releases. When in reverse, remove whatever the shredder gives up, with the switch set to off, of course. This should get you back in the shredding business. Next time you're at one of the office supply stores, get some shredder lubricator sheets. Using these from time-to-time lessen the incidence of jams.
    Enjoy! --W/D
