Leave the drive disconnected until you have booted up.

You could change the BIOS to tell it not to look for external boot devices to overcome this also.

All it is, is that the computer can see files on the drive that it thinks may be an operating system and it is trying to boot from that drive until it fails and then loads windows normally.

Wont boot into windows xp....

If you have the setup disk, boot the laptop with the system disk and when you are asked select repair.

The system either was attacked by Malware or became corrupted.

When booting up my computer it goes to the error page prior to loading windows and asks what mode...regardless of choice it goes to windows logo screen and sits there and wont load...

1. check to see if your pc is compatible with the software. You didn't specify if you are reloading or installing for the first time.
2.You didn't give hard drive capacity or any information about the Pc you are loading Windows on.
You may not have enough capacity on the hard drive to load the full XP
Wndows xp requires about 2 GB of hard drive space then at least 10 GB of space for swap files and operation files.

Compaq evo n110 compaq logo apears at switch on then windows xp logo then screen goes blue shuts down and repeats the same thing overand over

Your operating system was corrupted or some of the files are missing.. You just reinstall the operating system Windows XP to solved that problem.

Hard Drive Prevents any other windows device from loading

Hi, Mark Here.
Yes the setup on the xp install puts drivers into memory, but being an older version of windows B4 sta was out it does not have drivers to support it.

You could go to Microsoft & search for a new version of setup install drivers that includes sta, & download to thumb.
Really typical Windows Failure (driver not available freeze up or blue screen).

Steven,

it could be a heat realted, can you get to the cpu cooler? most laptops i have worked on this is accessible by lifting the keyboard.

Give it a blow out with a compressed air can and see if that works, if not try lifting the cpu cooler and cleaning off old thermal paste and reapplying new.
