You may want to open the drive and check the internal connections first to make sure none came loose after you have powered it down.

I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most USB portable / external hard drives and devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems (mac/ Linux) similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.

Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further
USB flash drives can fail for no apparent reason.
Sandisk Cruzers are especially bad for this.

USB hard drives should be treated with extreme care. this is a real hard drive and knocks and bumps can quite literally kill them.

If a drive is CLICKING after an accident there is a very strong possibility that it is dead or dying. This is known as the "click of death".

Mine did the same,, £150 down the pan as it happened after warranty. Even more funny, when I complained they said I should back up my data, funnily enough, the 'Maxtor secure storage motto' with shock protection etc led me to believe it would be a great backup device. All it took was a child to pull the wire and I lost it all.
Obviously Maxtor is behind nearly every other external hard drive manufacturer when it comes to flash/capacitor buffering.
I am defiitely not using Maxtor/seagate again, this was a shockingly poor piece of hardware.
When I finally managed to get the casing open i tested the harddrive, and it will not even be picked up by windows so I can format it.

My iomega external hard drive just beeps when ever i turn it on. How can I fix this?

ummm, i fixed my problem i had with a iomega 500gb external hard drive, it was beeping at me also, so what i did was i knocked it on its side, switched it off, by its own panel, then switched it back on, it came back into life and was recognised again!!

so try it with yours!

I think what what happens is, when you accidentally drop it, or knock it from time time(accidentally), the needle inside the hard drive goes out of place, and the hard drive will beep, or something to that effect. knocking the case itself again, might fix the problem, or maybe not, thats if the hard drive itself is more severely/inherentally faulty.

My external hard drive is not being seen by my computer?

1 of 2 things can be wrong...1 (cable may be loose) unplug the cable (ext HD) connected to pc, now reinsert back into pc..try this once or twice...until you see it appear in my computer....if this is not working and your ext HD came with a CD software..uninstall (make sure ext HD is not connected) software, then reinstall make sure your firewall allows it to be connected....this should do the trick...now plug HD back up to pc...do not format your ext hd unless you really really dont want the data on it (format erases everything)

You can try soldering it back, but it may still not work. If your soldering skills are not great, you should probably let someone who does that kind of work for a living try the repairs. Give me a call if you need to.

I am having a problem with my seagate freeagaent Desk 1tb ext hdd

Sounds like the Partition table has become corrupt.

Try some of the free tools from here:

http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/downloads/rescue_ntfs_partition_software/

Hopefully one of them will be able to repair the partition table on the drive and allow rescue. If not download a trial of Ontrack Easyrecovery Professional and run a scan firstly for damaged NTFS/FAT volumes and if that fails perform a RAW recovery of the filetypes you require.

Hard Drive Buzzing and Wont work (Seagate External Freeagent 1TB)

You are in trouble!
The buzzing sound is the heads trying to realign themselves at the beginning of the platter.
You could try putting it on a side and hope gravity helps.
But i'm afraid its broke beyond repair.

My external hard drive is unreadable

Does you drive make any sounds like these? If yes you have a mechanical problem and you should get a specialist to work on it. If not - try to remove the drive from USB casing and connect it directly to your PC or put into another USB enclosure. This should help if the problem is with the enclosure itself and not with the drive.
