Question about Curtis DVD8017 Portable DVD Player

1 Answer

Curtis DVD8007C says "No disc"

It says loading, loading, loading, while spinning... but then says no disc. How can I tell if the laser is faulty? what does "too low on caps" mean (as said in Solution)? Bought at garage sale, powered up okay, screen is fine, I get a Settings menu just fine, but should've played a CD in it first... :o( Now, I'm just determined to make it work.
If the laser is faulty should I just trash it?

Never heard of powered up on caps. But first try using and IRIS cleaner to remove dirt and dust from the laser eye. The disk has a brush embedded in it and is just run like a normal disk. It sweeps the dirt fromm the eye and then SHOULD be able to see it really does have a disk.

My Sony pmc 222v stereo shows "no disc" when a CD is inserted, it does not play. Any suggestions?

Did you check whether the disc spins inside it; after the disc has been loaded? If it does, and still do not recognize the disc; check with an other known disc. If that disc too do not play, the laser pick up unit is faulty, and should be replaced. If the disc do not spin inside the player; after loading it into; the Sled motor [the motor that spins the disc inside] is faulty.

How do I repair so I don't get "no disc" message?

Could be dirty or faulty laser, faulty decoder board or motor not spinning the disc.

Shows no disc and does not not spin the disc although there is a disc in the player

Probably dust or dirt on the laser. When so, the laserunit cannot find it's focus. As long as it does not find focus, the disc won't spin.
Clean the laser with pure water (no solvents) by means of a cotton earbud. If the unit is "old" the laser may be worn out. > replace.
The action of focus-finding can be seen by pushing 'play' without a disc loaded. The lens travels up and down 3 times. It will not find focus of course and will announce no disc. Warning: don't look directly into the lens. Laser beam ! By observing this, one can find out if the player really tries to find focus. If nothing happens, there might be a serious fault in the electronics.
Observing laser emission.
By looking sideways on to the laser, one should see some red light in the laser unit. One can also take a photodiode (LD271 f.i) or a phototransistor (any type), connect a DVM to it. Hold the device on top of the laserlens. A few hundred mV should be produced. How much exactly is hard to tell. One can at least monitor if there is laser emission or not.

My Curtis dvd player 1046 won't play dvd's, it says its loading then it says bad disc

First, try playing a regular music CD and see if that works. Next step would be to get a laser lens cleaner disc and run that in the machine. They come in both CD and DVD styles. You most likely won't get a DVD version to work since it's not reading DVDs, but you might get lucky and get a CD version to work, thus the reason for trying a music CD in the player.

If the cleaning doesn't work, or you can't play a CD either, then something has most likely died. There are really only two things that could go wrong with a DVD player, either the spindle motor (spins the disc) dies, or the laser dies. Both are somewhat common problems on low-end electronics. They can be fixed, but with low-end units, like those made by Curtis, it would cost you less to toss it out and buy a new unit.

After loading I get either No disk or Wrong disk. Very rarely display works, mostly it keeps spinning with loading on. I tried DVDs, CDs. Same. Cleaning laser did not help. Thanks for assistance....

You haven't specified nothing about the model number or brand name of you player. Yet i posts this solution, as a common fault symptom. From your description, I assumes that either Laser Picku Unit or Sled motor is faulty. Sled motor is one that spins the disc inside the player. Just open your players outer cover, insert a disc and see whether it spins as it loaded or not. If not replace the sled motor. If it spins, and the Laser Pickup Unit attempts to read the disc from its inside edge to outer, and fails to read the lead-in and lead-out data from disc, laser assembly is faulty and should be replaced with an idetical one both in type and number. In some cases, the strip wire that connects the laser unit to main board may get braked connection prints inside it, which cammot be detected easly. First of all replace this strip wire, and see the effect if disc spins as i indicated earlier. If you wants furthermore assistance, give me a mail, and indicate your need, as I may forget about the solution which I posts to you. OK.

Now, when I insert a disc, the player just indicates "loading" and will not play the disc. Just prior to this, it would play the movie part way then "freeze". I couldn't rewind or...

Please try to put in an ordinary audio CD track and see if this is detected. If yes the optical is working, if not there is no laser scanning and the possibility of the head being faulty is high.
Certain cleaner disks may not work but the best is to cleaning manually the laser head eye with a cotton bud, very gently and without pressing of the lens eye.
If there is still no result then watch the CD if it spins or tries to spin. If the head unit moves up or down to focus or in and out of the drive, if so the board seems to work correctly and the possibility that the optical head unit is the suspected fault.

My Daewoo DVG-5000N does not load the DVD correctly. It tries to spin it up and stops again while displaying that it is "loading". After a while it displays "no disc".

No disc error is usually caused by dirty optical lens or a faulty lens. Turn it off, unplug it, then try cleaning it with a very soft dry cloth and then try playing a cd which has no scratches.

The blue color part, that's called optical lens. It looks like a glass but its not a glass, its a plastic cap for the laser to go thru to read the discs. Never apply any wet solutions on it. Just use a soft dry cloth to rub off the dirt on it.
