  1. Step 1 Back up your data. Make sure you back up any important data stored on the hard drive in the event something goes wrong. Also, if you are selling or giving the hard drive to someone else, you should erase any data on the disk by formatting it.
  2. Step 2 Open the case. Remove any metal rings, watches or bracelets you may be wearing. Unplug the computer from the electrical outlet, then touch the metal casing to eliminate any static charge. You can also use an anti-static wrist strap if you prefer. Check the user's manual if necessary to determine how to open your particular PC case.
  3. Step 3 Locate the hard drive. Typically the hard drive will be connected to a flat 2 1/2 inch wide IDE cable and a power cable. Hard drives are often housed in removable metal cages which are secured to the computer case with one or more screws. Refer to your user's manual to locate the hard drive if necessary.
  4. Step 4 Disconnect the hard drive. Unplug the hard drive from the IDE and power cables. Grab the plastic IDE cable connector with your thumb and forefinger and gently pull until the connector breaks free. The power cable can be difficult to remove if the connector is fitted tightly. Make sure you don't bend any of the pins when disconnecting the cables.
  5. Step 5 Remove the hard drive. If the hard drive is fitted in a metal cage, locate and remove the screws that are holding the cage in place. Hold your hand under the cage to catch it if necessary. Once the cage is free, remove the small screws on either side of the hard drive to remove it from the cage. If the hard drive is connected directly to the computer case, simply remove the screws on each side of the hard drive and slide it out of the case.

This mostly happens when you remove a drive without Safely Remove drive function.
Try the USB lead - restart your computer - Change the Drive letter using the disk management Plug the USB back in hopefully it should reinstall the driver and you should be able to see it.

Missing or corrupted system 32 wont install off windows xp disk

try going to the bios and change the boot sequence for hard drive to cd
put the copy of xp in the external hard drive and reboot the computer
when it powers up it should boot up off the external hard drive
if that works go to computer --device manager and find recovery section
you may also go restore to a previous date and try for a fix from there
go google and get to microsoft and find that file download for xp and install it
if all that works shut the computer down and reboot back to bios and change back to reboot from hard drive
remove the disc from the external hard drive

Changing hard drive / do i have to reinstall os?

If the old hard drive is still working, then you could make an image of it and restore that image on the new hard drive removing the need to reinstall the Operating System.

There are several free programs available that can make the image:
Easeus Todo Backup
Paragon Backup & Recovery 2012 Free Edition

If the old drive has failed and you do not have a full backup, then you will need to reinstall the operating system and all your programs and data that was on the old drive.

After reinstalling the hard drive re-run the diagnostics if you receive the same error code Contact Us.
Run the Drive Self Test (DST) from the Utility Partition also known as the 32 bit diagnostics to determine if the previous error has been corrected. If the DST from the Utility Partition does not indicate a failure of the drive, we consider the error to have been corrected and the drive does not need to be replaced.

Restore will not work comp goes thru the motions and comes back with unable to restore, it doesn't matter how far back you go

Hi, I believe you need to reinstall your operating system, follow these instruction:
Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman";} To install new version of XP. Insert XP CD into drive, reboot pc pressing F1 button.. This takes you into BIOS, change your primary boot device to CDrom, save changes and reboot. Select boot from CD once this appears and wait for files to be installed. Select the part of the hard drive you wish to use for your operating system (usually the largest) and select partition this drive. Delete any previous os, and reformat hard drive. (Be aware this removes everything saved on your hard drive, so always back up first) Re boot afterwards and reinstall operating system.
Hope this helps

My internal hard drive is recognised as removable???

Your problem is Vista. It is the pits and by far the worst modern OS, second only to Windows Me. (Millenium Edition).

You need to start at the beginning. Go into DOS, use FDISK to Format the Drive, Go to BIOS and Assign it as the main disk. Disconnect any other HDs if you have them. Reinstall Windows 7 Pro if you can find a copy.

However, did you try this?
