Re: Windows

Hard drives dont read cd's
does the door close?
if not close it.

1)left clik my computer
2)double clik the cd rom drive, making sure theres a disk in it.
3)right clik on my computer
device manager
look for a yellow exclamation point or red X where the cd-rom is.
high light the cd-rom
right clik
restart the computer
windows will detect and re-install the cd-rom drive.
try a cd

if that doesnt work update windows

also buy a cd-rom cleaner at your local electronics store
clean the drive w/th cleaner
try a cd

if updating your driver for the cd rom drive and all ive suggested then its time for a new cdrom drive

The cd door won't open on the tower

CD Drive Tray problems
There are two ways to open the CD drive door if the button just below the drive tray does not work.
Go to My Computer and right click on the drive and click on Eject.
If this does not work then you can manually open the CD drive tray by -
Straighten a paper clip and gently insert it into a tiny hole below the drive tray next to the Eject button. Push the paper clip gently until the drive tray pops out, then pull the tray until it is fully out, then you can remove the CD disc.
If you still having problem opening with the Eject button, then the CD drive is faulty and needs replacing.

I have a dell desktop dimension c521. When we try and put in a cd it wont boot up it doesnt even start spinning the cd when we puit it in. Does the hard drive need to be replaced?

Not at all.
The DVD drive works independantly and if it has a dirty lens or the laser is faulty, it will give the error you have.
Maybe you require a new DVD rom if it won't clean up.

I wiped my hard drive on my dell computer and im trying to install windows again but its not reading the disk. The cd slot opens and closes but doesnt read the cd. I've tried booting from the cdrom but its...

1) Are you sure your CD-ROM works?
2) Is the disc a burnt copy of Windows? If so you may have burned it incorrectly so where it does not boot.
3) Make sure in your BIOS your boot device is set to your CD-ROM as the first boot device.

One of these things should confirm your problem and let you install windows.

Need to replace the hard drive

Very easy to do. You will need an antistatic wrist strap. Unscrew the screw/thumb screws on the side of the case which slides off. slide the case door off, connect your anti static wrist strap to you and a metal part of the case, to ensure you are grounded and don't fry any parts. Check what sort of hard disk your motherboard supports, it could be IDE or Sata. Older ones use IDE. Get a hard disc to match and plug it in where your old hard drive was. The hard drive is probably held in by clips or screws. remove them and place the new hard drive in the hard drive bays. Wire it up. You will need to install an operating system on your new hard drive. This can be done by getting a windows boot cd, entering the bios on startup by hitting the delete or f12 key/ the specified key. Then in the bios go to boot device priority set it to CD. Then reboot and it will install it on your new hard drive. Hope that helps.

Computer not reading the hard drives or cd rom drives

You first need to make sure that inside, the hard drives and cd roms' connectors are all firmly seated.

When you first turn on your PC, you can normally enter the BIOS mode, (before windows) by pressing the del key or f2 key. Once there you can make sure that the drives are being recognized. If they are, you would need to go to the boot section and enable hard drives and cdroms.

If they are not recognized,
Old IDE hard-drives (the ones with lots of pins on the back) (newer ones are called SATA and have plastic connectors) .. Old ide hard drives had a special jumper (little plastic rectangle on two pins) to indicate if it would run as a master or a slave drive. So your two drives should be connected accordingly.

If all the above sounds too complicated you would need to contact a friend savvy in the area.

Replacing a cd drive

The 4600 has PowerDVD to play DVDs (You should have the software CD to install it on the 3000) DVD burning software would be Roxio/Sonic, and you should have that CD too.
If you don't have the CDs, then try to download Free player software and Burning software

I have a Gateway 300x Micro-Tower case circa 2002 and I can not open the case, without breaking it. I'm trying to install a new audio card and can't get at the 300x innards. Help!

Most of these towers are vertical style, therefore the big button is just to the left of the Gateway symbol. Push it in and pull the left panel away from the case.

My hp wont loadup it has come up with a kernal missing or corrupt File:\windows\system32\ntkn1pa.exe status: 0xc00000e9

If you read the fine print on your Windows software you will learn that you have a 6 month warranty. So, load your windows cd and look for "Repair" if that is there use it. if not then reinstall your windows. 95% of the time this will clear the problem, BUT, 100% of the time you will lose ALL of your Documents. The only way to salvage any data is to remove your hard drive first and bring it to someone who has an opening for an extra hard drive on their tower. Then can boot from their own HD then hopefully switch to yours to copy all wanted data to a cd or dvd.
