That failure is predicted by the SMART reporting system. Its a status chip on the drive that reports to apps that can read the smart data from the hard drive. Its not always accurate but it usually is.

Time backup your data on that drive ASAP and then buy a new drive.

back it up immediately, the software on the HD has detected something failing, and it is telling you it is time to back up that drive, and replace the drive, these reports, are usually 100% right.

Purchase a new hdd NOW! and copy your data off while it is still there. You may be lucky and be able to use CloneZilla to clone the failing hdd saving you hours of uploading drivers etc.

Smart failure predicted on hard disk repair

This means either your hard disk is about to fail or it already has in which case you will need to purchase a new HDD (hard disk drive) and then contact acer to purchase recovery disks or if it is still under warranty then contact for service.

How to resolve problems (smart failure predicted on hard disk 0 : toshiba MQ01ABD050 - (S1))

Copy all the data from the drive to another drive because this one is predicted to fail very soon. Format the drive. That might work, but unlikely since SMART is a hardware problem and format is more of a software driven solution. It has some elements of a hardware issue, but not enough to fix most SMART problems. A low level format might help, but that is not a DIY.

A predict failure is just that. There is a good chance it fail. Make a backup and replace. You can also turn the SMART monitoring off in BIOS if you don't want the warning.

There is a big problem with newer conponents and Win XP versions prior to SP2. Especially with newer motherboards.

You have to make a bootable SP2 disk if you don't already have one. To do this use the slipstream proceedure specified on the Ms website. Many other websites describe the process with easier language.

Slipstreaming is a common practice now. Essentially, you copy your original install disk to the c: drive then download SP2 to C: drive then download the slipstream utility from MS. Running the slipstream utility then inserts the proper drivers (ide and HD drivers too) into the licensed copy you have. You then create a bootable disk from the slipstreamed files you have.

This approach is resolving alot of blue STOP errors and SMART errors.

ALSO, you want to make sure you are installing any drivers provided by the MB manufacturer AND Drive maker.

Good Luck

When you turn the computer on it says SMART Failer predicted on hard disk 0: HTS54108G9SA00-(S1)

S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) is a diagnostic method originally developed by IBM that at that time referred to as "Predictive Failure Analysis". This technology was developed for IBM mainframe drives to give advanced warning of drive failures. Based on this diagnostic, Compaq announced IntelliSafeTM, which was submitted to the ATA/IDE standards committees and the resulting standard was named S.M.A.R.T.
S.M.A.R.T. analyzes many of the mechanical attributes; over time, some failures can be predicted by detecting if the hard disk drive is moving out of tolerance. While the S.M.A.R.T. technology can detect upcoming issues, not all hard drive failures are predictable.

All this means on most modern drives is the hard drive is coming close to the maximum tolerances

I usually switch off in the bios smart monitoring.

This system is trying to predict a possible failure, which may or may not occur..

SMART stands for Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology.

If you want lots of details on what it is, and does, take a look at this link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-Monitoring,_Analysis,_and_Reporting_Technology

It is highly unlikely that you will be able to fix this since it's a hardware problem on the hard drive. The drive may last for years or it may die tomorrow. At a minimum I would back up everything you care about on a regular basis.

If you found this information helpful I would appreciate it if you would rate this solution. I hate to beg, but over half of the solutions I've posted have no feedback. I'm not paid for this I'm just trying to help.
