Question about Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W50 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Flash is inconsistent

Hi, The flash on my Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W50 is very inconsistent. If I take multiple pictures of the same subject, the flash only seems to work sporadically. Tried resetting everything, and waiting until the camera beeps after it's focused in on the photo. The camera is in AUTO mode.

Love the camera, but the randomness of a working flash is annoying.

Camera works great in full light, but when flash is needed, two of three shots are either way too dark, or way too light.

Camera is out of warranty. Is this a defect, or bad setting?

Same problem. Camera was fine until last night. Then in low light situation in AUTO mode (not AUTO w/ adjustable settings) flash quit firing. Checked all advice from manual and Sony web site. No fix. Battery is fully charged. Flash will RARELY fire in any other mode even when forced on. Coincidentally camera just went out of warranty and Sony website says $111 to repair. Not too happy here as I'm trying to keep up with a newborn picture wise.

Have the same camera. Flash doesn't fire even when forced on. I reset/re-initalized. This is the best. I disassembled the camera (I'm an electrical engineering major in school) and manually discharged the capacitor and it flashed! Reassembled the camera and still doesn't work....

Same problem here too. In all modes (fully auto, manual settings, forced flash or auto flash) flash is very inconsistent. Sometimes it flashes, sometimes it doesn't, now and then it flashes far too much + massively over-exposes the picture. Rarely does it work correctly. I've tried reinitialising the camera to default settings with no luck. Suspiciously (given some of the other comments) this also occurred just after the camera went out of warranty (by 3 months) and Sony's standard repair charge (£115 in the UK) makes it uneconomical to fix. Any suggestions most welcome.

Having the same problem with my DSC-W50. This must be some sort of defect.

same thing on mine, 2 months after warranty runs out, flash becomes inconsistent very frustrating, get abut three good pics from ten attempts.

  • Ghilly Mar 03, 2008

When I take a picture, my flash goes off but the pictures are still dark. Once in a while the flash works, but then the pictures are so bright that you can't see what I was even trying to photograph..

I have had exactly the same problem as all of the above - its really annoying because any camera shop i take it to they just say i havent got the camera positioned in the right light etc, which i know isnt true because my sister had the same camera and it works perfectly.  has anyone contacted sony about this apparent re-occuring problem with this particular model? if so what was the response?

Same thing here, it just started tonight, 6 months after warranty expires. This is my 2nd Sony camera in 4 years and I think I'm done with them now. My first one does some really weird stuff and I've always been so careful and nice to my cameras...
    :(

    nikon here i come...

WOW I have the exact same problem. Except I got my camera 2 years ago....Kind of angry b/c the flash isn't technically "broken" but it definitely doesn't work. And people always think it's because I don't know how to use it!

How do i get rid of the shutter delay and multi flash while taking a picture with my sony dsc-w55

If you have your flash set to "red-eye flash", it will fire "pre-flashes" to prevent redeye in your subjects. You can turn off that feature and set it for normal flash. As far as shutter delay is concerned, all you need to do is press the shutter button half-way and allow the camera to lock in the focus (it will beep) and then you can re-compose the picture and press the rest of the way when the moment is right.

It's a flash error. Could be flash fuse or flash board. If you have a multimeter and you're ready to open it, contact me at toms.safranovs@gmail.com or contact your local Sony service center.
I work in a Sony service center.

Flash

Hi - You can download the manual from the link underlined in blue below:

Cyber-shot DSC-W50

The camera is set to reduce the "red eye" effect that you see when using flash.
You can turn it off, see page 48:
