Nikon D300 RAW images have alot of noise / artifaction

I retired my D200 and picked up a D300, to my surprise the RAW images are lousy. They have alot of noise, at ISO 400 uncompressed. I am using capture nx v. 1.3 latest version for processing. The JPG images are stunning, so my guess is that Capture NX is screwing up the images.

Re: Nikon D300 RAW images have alot of noise /...

I have bought two Nikon D300 in the past ten days, the first camera had stuck pixels, 12 of them, red dots in every image. The second Nikon D300 is so noisey in every ISO other than 100... it is worthless to me at this point. Sharp as a tack, but so noisey, the sharpness is moot. I think I have a solution, but it will involve dumping a $164,000 Nikon equipment history over the past 30 years and embroidering new patches on my photo vest which read, CANON! The fact that I even have to consider such a move makes me nausious. Nikon has betrayed many of it's biggest fans, me being one of them. I don't know what happened at Nikon to allow them to fall so far behind Canon, who trailed Nikon for nearly 40 years, but SOMEBODY SHOULD BE FIRED!!!!

Do you have the sharpening turned up too high? Why not try a camera reset? Go into the menu and scroll to "reset" and follow the on-screen instructions.

I shoot RAW/basic jpg. I review them there is a contrast differen

This is normal. Bear in mind that the JPEG file has all the image processing done, while the RAW is just the raw data. Depending on your image settings (contrast, saturation, sharpening, etc) you may see some differences.

Can you make camera setting changes for raw in the Nikon D300 menu

To change to raw - push menu, then settings - image quality - select Raw - push ok. You're done. Raw ignores many of the other image settings, such as WB, Picture mode (Vivid, etc..); It does however pay attention to exposure compensation.

Nikon D200 incomplete RAW pictures

If youre using exposure bracketing, especially when raw+jpeg is used, this is saving out massive amounts of data to the memory card. Have you tried using a faster (80x) memory card and/or just using raw alone? You can always make the jpeg at the computer later.

You should have no trouble using the SDHC cards. SDHC stands for Secure Digital High Capacity. The images should load directly from camera to computer, without the need for any additional hardware.
