Question about Compaq Presario 5000 PC Desktop

Laptop keeps restarting

I am but eighteen years old and know little about computer technology. I possess a HP Compaq Presario C501NR, and have for several years. However, a little over a day ago, it has ceased to function properly after a random lock-up. Upon rebooting it, it has continued to restart seconds after displaying the WIndows XP logo, unable to access even my desktop nor the rest of my hard drive. I have allowed it to do so for hours, to no avail or change. I have even refrained for powering it on for several hours, and I am at a loss. In despirate need of help and greatly thankful for advice.

I apologize for not having previously stated so, but I have also tried operating in Safe Mode, again to no avail. All three Safe Mode options I am given, operating with last known good configuration, as well as normally starting all prove to have no obvious effect.

I appreciate the advice thus far. However, recent events have led to a new apparent error, the supposed lack of the Kernel32.dll file. Upon researching what this was, I discovered that it seems to be a file for memory management. If this is true, is there little chance for recovery?

  1. See if you can start in Safe Mode (hit F8 before Windows loads - best way is to keep tapping F8 after you power it on. You should get a menu with "start in Safe Mode" as an option.
  2. Once booted in safe mode go to Control Panel, System, Advanced, ;Startup and recovery'.
  3. Click the Settings button and remove the tick from the "Automatically Restart" box.
  4. Click all the OK's to get back to Control Panel.
  5. Reboot as normal and the system should display an error code. Post that error code here and we can have a look at it.

OK - do you have a Windows CD or Windows Recovery CD?

  • reg091 Sep 07, 2009

Sorry, have to disagree with Shadowarrior - if the memory was bad it would fail the POST test and wouldn't even get to loading Windows.

  • reg091 Sep 08, 2009

This is recoverable but you will need the Windows XP CD. If you have one (or can get hold of one) then the solution is here:

It could also be related to hardware problems.
a corrupted ram...is most likely the cause of it.

well, depends on your ram setup. if you have a wrong ram setup...you might have a boot, even login to windows, but system would reboot.

    i remember a client's comp:
    it had 2X 1gig ddr400 ram
if i use ram A...it boots fine..and is stable..
if i use ram B...it boots..then either reboots or freezes.
if i use both ram A and B...it boots...and keeps either restarting or freezing.
    even on swapping ram slots.

Since he cannot even login to safemode, nor does he get BSOD, (blue screen of death) I would say, he does not have a software error (or corrupted OS). nor a corrupted MBR.(master boot record).

It definitely is a hardware error/conflict.

I want to turn off the touchpad

HP and Compaq Presario laptop computers are made by the same company, so the hardware on certain models of each brand might be nearly identical. Many newer laptops, for example, use identical technology to control the touchpad, which in turn controls your mouse cursor. If you want to disable this touchpad use the software already installed on your PC.

Click "Start." Click "Control Panel." Click "Mouse." Click the "Device Settings" tab. Click on the listing for the HP touchpad to highlight it. Click the "Disable" button to disable the HP touchpad on your Compaq Presario laptop computer.

You need a Recovery CD for your model laptop. Boot up with this CD and follow the instructions.
You can get a Recovery CD from the Compaq/HP WEB site.

On my laptop (presario C501nr), network drivers for xp

XP has its own stuff built in ... check your hardware on the Windows XP compatability list to see if XP will operate on your newer computer. Find the list here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314062

Put wrong recovery disk into new computer.

have a look here
and more pertinent, the F11 option here. If you have the right disks, you should still be able to run them...you will just have to boot windows from the recovery disks...

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.

The monitor reads: system boot failure. Insert recovery disk.

McAffee Security or adding memory cards should not effect the ability to do a system recovery, but so be it. Here is a list of presario laptops, do you know which is yours?

I ' ve got compaq presario C501NR Notebook PC computer. My computer is falled. When he start the operating system is now off.Sometimes he turn on,and sometimes he turn off.My laptop compaq presario C501NR...

you may have damaged the computer if it fell as you say. As for installing windows Xp that should not be a problem did you download driver first and burn a CD. If not get on another computer and donwload driver for your laptop burn them on a CD then install your drivers for XP that way you have the right drivers and it should work if not damaged inthe fall.
Good Luck.
