Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Restarting computer I just got the My Book 250gb external hard drive for my xp computer and when I plug it into the usb 2.0 slot and it is detected, my computer automatically restarts.  When I plug it into a 1.0 slot it works fine.  I had a Comstar hard drive before and it worked fine in the 2.0 slot. Thank you.

The external hard-drive is "plug-and-play", and Windows XP/Vista/7 all support "plug-and-play".
Thus, it should automatically be detected by Windows.

So, what's your "real" problem? Symptoms? Error-messages? What happens? What does not happen?

New external harddisk cant be detected on my computer

Since you have not given any specifications about model of your HDD hence I'd consider your HDD connects through USB. Your USB driver is old you shall consider upgradation.

I cannot retrieve my files from the wd 250gb

First instinct is that your drive has failed. I would remove the drive and insert it into a system to test. If it works, then it is the housing from the external drive that failed. If the drive does not work once inside your system, then the drive is bad. Good luck.

I require a driver for our Beyond micro external hard drive.

It looks as though there is no driver support for beyond micro although the specs state that the drive is plug and play. which means you just plug it in and windows sets it up. other than that there are no software or drivers for it.

best of luck.
hope this helped.

Be sure to plug the USB connector and the back of the CPU. Then go to Application folder if your running on OS X. Locate the disk utility, then double click it and see if your external drive have been detected. If it is detected try to repair it. and then thats it

The I250HD35 is plug-and-play with Windows XP. That means that all of the drivers needed to run your hard drive are included in Windows.

If your computer is asking for drivers when you plug in your drive, one of two things is probably happening:

1) Windows XP doesn't know where to look for the right drivers

2) Your drive has malfunctioned

The easiest way to assess which of these is happening is to take your drive and plug it into another computer that is running Windows XP. If it is detected properly on the other machine, then your computer doesn't have the right drivers or is looking in the wrong place for them. If it doesn't, then I/O Magic will be happy to replace your drive if it is still within the warranty period

If it is detected properly on another Windows XP machine, then when it asks for drivers, make sure to point it to the WindowsINF directory. This is where the default drivers are located.

If your drive is not detected properly on the other computer, your drive is probably experiencing a hardware malfunction. Please visit the I/O Magic website at and click on Support for specific return information.

Have a nice day,

Need driver

Hello maris12345

You shouldn't need drivers for your USB mass storage device on Windows XP. It should be "plug-n-play".

Is yours an older computer? If the computer's USB interface (hardware) is not at least USB ver 1.1 then that may be the problem. (I assume your external hard drive isn't being detected, yes?)

Can you run other USB devices on the same port(s) OK?
