Question about Air Tools & Compressors

1 Answer

I have a briggs & Stratton Brute air compressor, model 074003. It won't build pressure past 30lbs. It starts leaking air at the housing where the on/off switch is located.

Generac 6hp pressure washer starts and runs fine, no real leaks, but it never builds up pressure.

after making the water connections, be sure to hold the trigger open on the wand for a couple of minutes before starting. All the air must be removed from the system before it can create pressure.

I have a porter cable compressor, but the pump won't shut off, and the pressure won't build it

Here are a few things to check, you may have already checked some of these.

*Electricity...Compressors will run best with full 115Vot 15AMP/Or 220V electrical supply from a circuit, over the shortest electrical cord as possible.

*Air Leaks..Place your ear close to the compressor and listen for air leaking, if you hear air that is not normal and means you have to locate and repair whatever it is that is leaking.
*Check the air unloader valve... The air unloader valve will blown out air when you turned off the compressor, that is normal.
But it should not have air leaking out of it all of the time. If so then it is faulty and in need of repair/replacement.
*Valves...If either the intake or exaust valves fail, breaks, or fails to seat, then your compressor will run 24 hours a day and never build up to the correct pressure for shut-off.
*Gaskets...Check to see if your gaskets have failed.
You could have a gasket failure between the pistons and you will never know it because it shows no external air leak.
If this situation happens then the air will only cycle between cylinders and never build up the correct air pressure.
One way to check the gasket is remove the air filter, then put your hand over the intake.
If correct then it will **** you hand against the intake.
If the valve or valves have failed then you will feel the air sucking in and blowing out.
*Piston Rings and Cylinder...The piston rings could be stuck, broken, or worn and not allowing the correct pressure to build up in your tank.
A worn cylinder will also contribute to the problem of pressure build-up.
*Pressure Switch...Check for air leaks at the pressure switch, it has a rubber diaphram that can fail and leak air out of the system.

Bought a second hand briggs and stratton 10 gallon air compressor and need to know what type of oil to buy for it.

Use actual "Compressor Oil".
It's available at most auto parts & hardware stores & Home Depot type places."

The 6.5 hp Briggs & Stratton engine that powers my 2550 elite pressure washer is blowing oil out the exhaust and air filter while it is running. Do you think this is a gasket problem or a piston ring...

It most likely is a ring problem as the gasket only keeps the combustion gases in and would leak around the head as a loud noise. Of course it could be the valves, but I doubt it as most of these engines are splash fed instead of pressure, so the only explanation is the compression ring is letting oil blow past.

Hello, my 8 gal briggs &stratton wheelbarrow air compressor will run to 145 psi then just stall out, if i trip the unloadrer valve before it dies then it just goes full speed and sounds like its goin...

Your unloader valve isn't unloading. This valve is supposed to stop the compressor at (likely) around 125#. If it's one that you can service, try adjusting it back down to 125# - if not serviceable, it'll have to be replaced. Make sure that your pressure line between the valve/tank/governor is intact and not kinked, too.
I'd like to know how this one turns out, please!

Check to see if air is leaking past 'pressure relief' valve. It's probably leaking and that's where all the air is going.
