Mybook 1TB was dropped

My Mybook fell off a table and after much cursing, I plugged it back in and it worked fine. I had to reboot my laptop and now it doesnt recognize it as it was ever there, i.e, the computer sees it, just as a generic volume and I am unable to access it. I have many thousands of important work related data on there and am now unable to access it. Please help

You may want to disconnect it and open it up to check that all the internal connections are fine.

It may also be possible for you to hook it up directly to a computer internally with the correct interface eg SATA or IDE.

If you cannot read the disk directly then there is a very good chance it is damaged beyond repair.

Only very expensive data recovery outfits have the special clean rooms and facilities to recover data properly.

Just in case it may be somthing les extreme I have also included a few other steps that may help.

I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most USB portable / external hard drives and devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especialy true if you move a HUB to another port

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further

I just purchased a My Book 3.0 IT DOES NOT START UP

I found my MyBook didn't work on my Dell laptop. I had to plug it into my desktop and format it before it would work on my laptop.

Is there any way you can try connecting your MyBook to a different computer? See if you can format it on a different device and then try your laptop again.

Samsung 1tb external will not allow my computer to boot

Try checking your bios to see what harddrive the computer boots from.
Your PC might be trying to boot from that samsung story which I assume doesn't have an OS installed.

My Western digital 1tb wont work inspite of drivers being instal

Mybook does not require any additional driver to work on systems from Win XP onward, same for recents Linux and MAC OS.
If the drive is not detected on more of one computer, then it is usually because of a fault.
Try a replacement cable (mybook uses Mini USB to USB, available at computer and at camera shops). If still no luck contact WD, mybooks have one year warranty. If you want to recover data, the disk must be mounted on a different enclosure, that service can be asked when discussing repair.

Video files on MyBook 1TB hard drive lag

So, if you move the file that won't load onto your laptop it then loads? If so can you plug it into another mac and see if it works on that one (if it works it an issue with your macs firwire ports and an os re-install may be needed or your card has been damaged) or can you try another hardrive with your mac (if this works you need to reformat your mybook)? I've bined a HD this year already, not good.

I just drop my WD external hard disk (Please help)

When you drop your hard drive for more than a few inches, you just have to face the fact that the HD is dead, period. If for some miracle the drive still works, then it's the work of Jesus/Shiva/whatever deity of your choice. I'm sorry I can't offer anything more constructive. See Myth 24 on this page:
