Question about Uniden Solara DSC VHF Marine Radio

1 Answer

I have a Uniden Solara DSC in my boat. I tried to contact a coast guard vessel recently. They barely heard me even though I was only 200 yards away. The coasties suggested that I might have a bad antenna. Any advice will help.

Why does the alarm go off?

It sounds very much to me like a DSC call has been activated by another vessel in your area.

Verify uniden solara dsc is receiving gps signal from lowrance elite 5

If the radio is receiving data from the Elite 5, (Owners manual, link below) Page 6 the GPS icon (#11) on that page will indicate it.
Hope this helps.

My Solara Dsc radio, which has worked well for several years, suddenly began blowingthe 2 amp fuse on the red power line whenever the transmit button was pushed on the mic. Why?

No worries here.
According to Uniden, the 6 amp fast blow fuse is the correct one.
Not entirely sure why there'd be a 2 amp with your old radio, but I suspect the radio is good.

What do I need in order to get a skipper license?

First, you must know that getting a skipper license isn't easy since it requires responsibility not only for the vassel itself but also for the people and crew aboard. It takes a long time and some bureaucracy to get this license. For more details: http://skippercourse.com/skipper-license-usa and http://www.uscg.mil/nmc/cb_capt.asp

Here's a good one for an expert. Our newish coastguard boat fitted with 3 VHF radios - all working correctly, recently had a wireless headset system installed. We get huge amounts of electrical nosie over...

From your info the GND & shield (could be the same) are crossed. or one is open. A shield as in the antenna coax or an isolated ground as in an internal type coax in the interconnect cable of the wireless headset assembly. I suggest doing a 'BOARD WALK' routine, Move the wireless assy from one VHF unit to another, the problem follows-bad head set assy. If not, return to original VHF, problem returns bad internal connection in VHF unit. Please let me know the outcome.

I press dsc and see no change on the screen

Many VHFs will not acknowledge any of the DSC functions if the unit is not receiving position data. If the unit is correctly wired to a GPS or chartplotter and you can verify that it is receiving position information, then you may have a faulty radio.

I just purchased a uniden solara dsc.I HOOKED IT UP AND THE NOAA WORKS BUT I TRIED TALKING AND NOTHING HAPPENED.(I have a tractor with a radio and neither of us could hear each other).

The Uniden Solara is a MARINE RADIO not a CB. Marine (boat) radios operate in the VHF-Hi range and CB is in the VHF-Lo range. You also need a license to operate a marine radio, or you can identify yourself with the name of your boat but you MUST be in the water.
