How do I remove steering cable from 40 hp Mercury outboard

Depending on your boat , you normally have to unbolt the engine then remove off the transom , with help or a crane etc ! First remove the steering link bar then undo the large nut on the steering cable then disconnect the battery and all other cables and control cables etc then unbolt the engine and lift up so you can remove the steering cable ! If any corrosion in the tube you must clesn out and grease before fitting new cable and all others in reverse order !!

Husqvarna Rider 155 No steering Rear end of cable looks okay

The steering is fairly basic, a steering wheel that turns a steering shaft, on the end of the shaft is a sprocket, around the sprocket runs a short chain, on either end of the chain is a steel cable, both cables run to a quadrate at the underside of the engine, the r/h cable then goes the the l/h fixing and the l/h to the right, so either the locking screw on the steering wheel shaft has come loose and not turning the lower shaft, or the sprocket has sheered from the lower shaft, or the cables are not adjusted correctly, remove the cover on top of the chassis between you feet, you will then see the lower shaft, sprocket and chain, you should see the problem when the steering is turned.

Boat steering cable

This steering is swedged at the factory and can not be separated. If you will remove one end. (Motor end works best) And slide a cut bicycle innertube down over the end and hose clamp it to the plastic covering, you can force some light oil into the steering.

If this doesn't work in a day or two, you need a new steering cable.

Stearing on my 4yo 60hp mercury outboard will not budge

if you have "rotary" or "rack and pinion" steering. what your dealing with is rust. 2 things you can do to test the steering system. (1) tilt engine all the way down using the trim an tilt system. On the engine, you will see a steering rod that is parallel to the transom. One side of the rod is connected to the engine(ignore that connection), the other side curves down and connects to the steering cable. Disconnect steering rod from cable by unscrewing the nut counter clockwise. Once you disconnect the steering rod from cable. Push steering rod forward towards bow swinging it out of the way. Engine is now free from boat steering system. “Testing the engine steering tube“ all you have to do is manually turn the engine port and starboard using your hands. If your able to turn engine, the problem is the boat steering system. which you can fix. If you can' turn the engine then the job will require the engine to be removed from boat and transom bracket rebuilt. Take it to a repair shop.(2) with the engine still disconnected from the boat steering system. Get in the boat and turn the steering wheel. A good steering system you should be able to turn the wheel with just a finger. If wheel does not turn, you have one of two problems. Bad cable or bad steering helm. I always tell my customer to change both as a kit as a safety issue. if you are trying to save money. pull cable from helm, turn wheel if it turns easy replace cable (keep cable don't throw it away you have to get it matched) if wheel still stuck replace helm.

Installing Boat Steering Cable

The rack and pinion cable steering is fantastic unit adn super smooth.

Assuming you have the right length cable, you start fomr the engine end and work to the steering rack end.

You need to hook up the 'rod' end to the motor via the morse tube on the engine. The rod end of the cable goes thorugh the morse tube and attached to the motor on the other side.

Centralise the motor fore n aft, and then centralise the steering wheel. Now drop on the rack onto the steering pinion (the thing the wheel attaches to) and do up the four bolts.

Test the full range of movement. The unit should have come with instructions which are pretty clear on how to do this...

Replace airbag on `92 honda accord

When an SRS cable reel assembly is removed and set aside during vehicle repairs, the cable reel may rotate inside the assembly so it is no longer centered. If the assembly is reinstalled with the reel off-center, the cable can break when the steering wheel is turned to full lock. The cable reel holding fixture locks the reel while the assembly is off the vehicle, keeping it centered for reinstallation.
CABLE REEL REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. Follow the procedure in the appropriate service manual for disconnecting the battery, and removing the dashboard panels, steering column covers, airbag, and steering wheel.
^ Always install short connectors on the connectors for the driver's and passenger's (if so equipped) airbags.
^ Make sure the front wheels are pointed straight ahead before removing the steering wheel.
2. Verify that the cable reel is centered; the yellow gear tooth is lined up with the alignment mark on the cover. Install the cable reel holding fixture in the cable reel assembly as shown. Use a TORX T-10 wrench.
3. Disconnect the 6-P connector, then remove the cable reel assembly.
CABLE REEL INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Verify that the front wheels are still pointed straight ahead.
2. Reinstall the cable reel assembly, and reconnect the 6-P connector.
3. Remove the cable reel holding fixture.
4. Follow the service manual procedure for reinstallation of the steering wheel, airbag, steering column covers, and dashboard covers.
5. Verify SRS operation as described in the service manual. Road test the vehicle.
^ If the steering wheel spoke angle is not correct, change it by adjusting the tie rod ends. Do not remove and reposition the steering wheel.
