Sound to me that the Magneto Coil is going bad or has a bare wire. Seems like you are not getting good spark all the time, you can check at the spark plug end.

Cranks but dies after 2seconds....why

Hi Vernon:
It sounds like a fuel delivery problem.
Is there a fuel filter? Could be plugged.
Check that fuel flowing through carb. Drain plug?
When carb serviced, were all small orifices clean out (compressed air?)

Check engine light sputters knocks and dies

There are several issues that can cause this. (1) Fuel Pump which is located on the sending unit in the case tank. (2) debris in the gas tank causing causing the debris to wrap around the boot or the sock (3) clogged catalytic converter (4) misfire of a plug or simply a bad plug (4) speed sensor (TCM) (5) bad air filter

Fuel Pump Assembly from a wreck ($60) plus install or new about $350 installed, cleaning of the gas tank ($90) or new gas tank $300 installed or used gas tank from wrecker ($125), plugs ($90 plus install), TCM speed sensor $250 installed (dealer only) and bad air filter ($20 easy install)

I have a 16 year-old MTD lawn tracotr with a 12.5 hp briggs & strattion engine. The tractor will run for 5 minuted then quit. It appears that the n(new) fuel filter is not full, thus gas is not...

Were the engine rpm's steady when it died? If it was hunting, the carb. probably needs cleaned.

The fuel filter can maintain an air bubble in it and still flow plenty of fuel. So does it restart after it dies? You can check the cap by running with the cap a little looser and see if it dies, I have not ever encountered a cap failure, but you could look to see if the vent hole in the cap is plugged.

If you had a crack in the fuel line or were sucking air in somewhere it probably would not run right from the outset.

Model 3516 gas chain saw runs for about 10 minutes and conks out. Wait a one day and it starts up but does the same thing. Has new spark plug cleaned air filter and proper mixture of fresh gas and 2-cycle...

The engine can be running too lean (plug will show you that, very grey and dry.) crank seals leaking (lean) blocked fuel filter in the carby and pick up hose(lean) mixture setting too lean. You can try 1st by turning the H needle in the carby anti clockwise a 1/4 of a turn and try it. only the H needle. If this does'nt do anything check the others.

Edger will not stay running

Cleaning the plug doesnt mean the plug may not be fouling out. It is usually the easiest and cheapest resort, rule it out by installing new one. Take the air filter out while you try to run it also,if it isnt either of those I would look into having the carburetor cleaned and checked.

Wont start after 6 mos. I changed the spark plug, drained & added fresh gas, checked the fuel filter... Kicks over fine. Ran for 4 seconds, then it died. Always ran & started great before.

With a new plug and fresh gas it should start. Check to make sure there isn't a kill switch turned off or that the gas petcock from the tank to the carb is on.

How did you check the fuel filter? Disconnecting it from the fuel line that goes to the carb is the best way, making sure the gas is turned on under the tank. Bleed off a little gas into a can or something just to make sure the filter isn't plugged.

The last thing I'd do is take off the air filter and spray a little starting fluid in the carb. It may start and run several times if there is old gas in there somewhere. Remember the bowl on the carb is probably still full of old gas. After some fresh fuel reaches the plug it should start and continue to run.

(You might drain the bowl on the carb of ols gas before you go any further)

Good luck!

Toro SR4 Running problem when hot

It can be quite a things - a blocked air filter or a blocked exhaust. To clean the exhaust, unbolt it from the manifold, hold it vertical and hit on the side until no more soot comes out. Changing the air filter should be pretty straightforward. If the spark plug bottom end is black then you have the fuel mixture too rich and you should lessen the flow of fuel.
