500 GB My Passport Essential - what software to use?

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} I have just bought this 500GB Passport Essential drive, and it was recommended I use XP backup with it since the software included with the drive has problems In reading further, it was recommended to use WindowsXP Sync Toy . Then I went to CNET and discovered Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} Androsa FileProtector 1.4.4 for encryption of files is rated the highest by editors and users. Which is better to use with the WD drives?

It was also recommended when I set up my external drive, it will by default format in fat FAT 32 (Used on older computers?), so I should reformat in NTSF? How do I know which one my computer uses? It was custom built 5-6 yrs ago and has XPO 32 bit, so sounds like it’s Fat 32 (?).

Thanks, DebInTx

The web information you posted got hit by the Fixya phishing catcher, but luckily you gave enough information to make a suggestion.

If you are going to connect to any older computers then the assumption of using FAT32 is correct and you should stick with that eg. windows 95 etc.

However from XP onward the ability to read NTFS was available.
NTFS does offer minor security benefits as well as better file handling.

My recommendation would be for NTFS

Even XP that was setup with FAT32 has an option to convert to NTFS . It does not take too long and in my view has shown itself to be of benefit.
(its a one way deal so if you choose to use it then there is no going back)

Fat32 is yesterdays file system and is mostly used for small partitions and flash drives. Always format new hard drives in NTFS. The hard drives for the most part don't care what backup utility you use.

CRC errors are when the data is corrupted. You should run some tests on the hard drive.

I tried to format my 500gb WD passport essential with exfat using windows 7 for my mediastar pvr . Now neither pvr or windows 7 can see the harddrive

Windows 7 does _NOT_ support 'exfat' drives, as you have found out.
You can "format" the drive, to use 'FAT32' or 'NTFS' file-systems.

Can operating system (OS) that is backed up be used as bootable software on a replaced HD?

It depends. If you used a 'drive-image' program to make a copy, then you can use 'drive-image' to copy from the backup onto the new disk-drive. But, if you did a file-by-file copy, the answer is 'no'.

My computer wont recognize the drive or allow me to reformat my passport.

Try downloading the device driver from western digital site for your respective OS. And try formatting it with the western digital inbuilt software, which works great.

My computer has 2 drives (C and D). My WD Passport will recognize and backup the C drive, but it won't backup the D drive. It doesn't split the files into pictures/video/etc like it does with the C, and...

Well, you don't have to use WD's software...you can better backup software like Acronis..you can back any files you want, or, the whole computer with installed programs, operating system and all. Are you using WD software, or windows? You can just select the files you want to copy from the drive in Windows, and just copy them to the drive, you don't have to use WD software.

My computer will not recognize my 160GB WD My Passport Essential portable hard drive.

if you have any software that you installed with the drive try uninstalling it, i had the same trouble on my 500gb WD. after you have uninstalled the software, restart your computer and reconnect the drive. hopefully it will recognise the drive as it did with mine.
