I loaded a new, Windows XP formatted IDE hard drive into an IBM Thinkpad 570e, and it's not doing anything. Is there a BIOS reset procedure or something I don't know about? I do this all the time with Dell laptops but I've never even tried with an IBM

Hello,
If IDE drives are hooked to the same controller one must be configured in BIOS as Master, and the second as slave.
If there is only one drive, it should be set as master: Two drives on two different controller must be both defined as master.

Hope it helps.

This is a possibility, the T23 is a very old laptop.
Normal 0 Check the BIOS to see if the hard disk is detected, if not open then re-seat the hard drive.
If the BIOS does not detect this hard drive, then the hard drive is probably faulty.

If it was me, I would not waste my time and money trying to get a new hard drive for this ThinkPad.
Disk drive manufacturers do not make small capacity hard drive anymore and the current range of hard drives won't work in your ThinkPad because the BIOS cannot support these hard drives.

Go to IBM website and look for drivers for your computer model (T41) and locate the network drivers. (This obviously has to be done from another computer with internet access). Download and save the setup file to a flash drive and then run the setup on the IBM T41

I can't load any OS on an IBM Thinkpad

Since both operating systems are failing to install, I would suspect that there is a problem with the installation of the harddisk (cable not securely connected) or the new harddisk is faulty.

I can't figure out how to set my hard drive as "Master", I don't see anything like that in the bios menu. Where do I find it?

Hi Donovan,

In order to save you a lot of time and trouble, I wonder if you might comment me back as to what you are trying to accomplish. Answering a these questions will help too.

  • Please confirm we are talking about a thinkpad.
  • How many hard drives do you have
  • Does the machine boot
  • Does your CD work
If you have one drive and it boots, its master

Unless you have two Hard drives, the master / slave is sort of moot. There is also the CS option. This is why I need additional info.

Best regards,
Mike

I need to format an HDD for an IBM thinkpad 570e that came without one, and from what a lot of people say, it won't take windows xp pro. I don't have any other OS, so has anyone tried to do this...

Before formatting the drive ....
you will need to save your drivers on a cd/dvd disk if you dont have the original disks

Formatting the drive should be straight forward,
remove it from your machine and take it to another computer,
your IBM Thinkpad should be staight forward to reinstall even without taking your drive to another computer,I found this step easier tho....
after formatting this drive you could just insert to your machine and then reload your software from the beginning providing you have your disks,

You might have a password locked hard drive and or your bios may be locked also ,in this case replace the drive after which your new os install should give you access and functionality,
update your drivers on the internet and SP2 updates will give you hi speed usb 2.0 functionalilty.....

Good luck with the formatting,if you need help let me know,
have a great day

The IBM Recovery Disk that comes with those laptops is set up for Windows 2000, not Windows XP Pro. The answer is No, you cannot use the IBM Recovery Disk for them, if you install Windows XP Pro.

However! You will have a recovery disk, because you will have the Full Installation disk for Each laptop. Windows XP Pro Full Installation Disk.

(Microsoft Users License states "One genuine copy of Windows per One computer" That means you need Two, genuine copies of Microsoft Windows XP Pro)

You don't need to get a command prompt to format the hard drive.
Just boot up with the CD as the first boot device. Press F12 just after you switch on the laptop, then select the CD as the temporary boot device, insert the Windows XP install CD in the drive.
When the install process starts and displays the partitions, delete the existing partitions, then create a new partition, and then do a full NTFS format, not a quick format.
Now ou are on your way for a new Windows install.

Reinstalling windows xp on a new hard drive - Thinkpad t30

You can go about this 2 ways.
First, if you have, or can get your hands on a copy of Windows xp; Load the windows system, then go to the IBM support site and download your drivers. Then you will be ready to go.
Secondly, call IBM support and get a set of recovery cds. You will have to have the information from the stickers that are on the bottom of the pc. I don't remember the exact cost, but as I remember it's about $54-55. Usually takes a couple of days to receive them.
Either way that you do it, you're going to wrap up a couple of hours.
