SOURCE: My craftsman 15.5HP kohler riding mower turns over

Try cleaning or better yet, replacing the spark plug. Depending on age and how your tractor was maintained, there are other possible causes.

  • Gummed up fuel system
  • dirty fuel filter
  • defective or misaligned armature/magneto (part that causes your plug to spark, igniting the air/fuel mixture, thus starting the engine)
  • throttle linkage/cable problems
  • low oil level. Some Kohler engines use a low oil shut down sensor which won't allow the engine to run or start to avoid internal damage.
  • Mechanical engine problems
I hope you find this solution helpful. Please rate it thanks for using Fixya!

Because the charging circuit in the mower has failed. Usually caused by a faulty voltage regulator.

How can I test a riding mower regulator? (puts out 23 amps @ 3800 rpms. My dmm only goes up to 10 amps.(system won't charge battery while in operation. Can it be tested off the mower? Mower is a Craftsman...

Simplest test is to leave it on the engine, battery hooked up normally. Run the engine at normal full speed (not just idling) and use your voltmeter to measure the voltage across the battery with your DMM. If you measure 13.5 to 14 volts, your rectifier/regulator is probably OK.
It can't easily be tested off the mower. You'd need a source of AC at 24 volts to simulate the motor's stator winding, and a load that draws about 23 amps at 12 volts.
Don't forget a bad battery can cause failure to charge - it's not always the regulator.

Lawn mower will not hold charge with new battery sometimes starts sometimes no l 120 john dear mower

Check your battery water level if it's not a sealed battery. Some small batteries require you to fill them with both acid and water, some with water only when new.

If that is not a issue then you are most likely running on your battery alone. You need to check your charging system. Check your battery voltage when the unit has not run for at least an half an hour. Then check it when it's running. The voltage should be higher. It should be 12.5 to 14vac. Lower means your alternator is not working or a fuse is blown in your charging system. Higher means your voltage regulator went bad and the higher voltage will cook your battery in time. The voltage regulator is usually in the alternator and can not be changed without replacing the alternator. Check your parts diagram. If it lists a voltage regulator then you are in luck.

Check the seat switch for the running problem. Disconnect the switch and jump the harness with a piece of wire, and see if the tractor stays running. If so, then the switch is bad. As for the charging problem. Test the voltage regulator. Start the tractor and put a volt meter across the battery. Red to red and black to black. Run the RPM to full throttle. You should have a reading of 14 to 14.5 volts. If not, the regulator is bad. Hope this helps.
