Removed blade. Sprayed WD40 on top/bottom of adapter & shaft- waiyed 30 sec. Lightly tapped adapter with hammer then adapter slid right off. Adapter was slottedon one side that matched theshaft slot. Then I was able to remove propeller drive belt cover and belt. Replaced everything in reverse order

Remove the blade bolt and blade, slide the adapter off the crankshaft. If it will not slide off, spray it with a good penetrating oil and let is soak for a bit then take a SMALL hammer and gently tap on the sides of it while pulling at the same time

How to remove rear drive wheels on old MTD 21

Daren Ingold's suggestion works only for the right rear wheel on my 19+ year old MTD Yardman 21" self propelled mower. The ratchet spur on rear left wheel is held on by a bolt in the center of the axle and a spline. Remove the center bolt and washer. Pry the ratchet spur off the spline by using three medium blade screwdrivers wedged between the wheel and the spur gently tapping the three screwdrivers in succession until the spur is half off the spline. It will come off easily after that. Remove the spur, noting direction, and remove the wheel and replace it with one of the front wheels (they're all the same design) if it is in better condition and use the rear wheel for the front. Good luck ever finding a new replacement for this particular wheel. My mower is 19+ years old but runs perfectly otherwise. Stored in dry basement.

Vibrating 38" deck on MTD yardman mower

Hi, first replace the blade spindle bearings, if you had to hit them to free them up the bearings are shot. Secondly, replace the deck belt. Because you engaged the blades with a siezed bearing the belt will have a worn section where the v will be thinner thus causing the vibration as it passes through the pulleys. Regards Phil.

My MTD riding lawnmower is burning thru the new belts I just purchased. The new belts are 954-0371A which replaces 754-0371A. The old style belt lasted 5 years. Even before engaging the clutch, the belt...

My idea is not about the belts, but is about the deck. If the tensioning mechanism on the deck is getting stuck in an intermittant position than the belt may be just tight enough to turn blades while slipping through the pulleys, this may cause enough friction to start melting your belts. If this is the case you will have to remove your mower deck and see what is preventing the mechanism from functioning properly.

I have never run into this problem. Craftsman riders are manufactured by American Yard Products (AYP) and are owned by Husqvarna Co. MTD is their own manufacturer. I would assume that if you want to hook this MTD blade to an AYP mower there would be some "back yard engineering" necessary. If there is an adapter available to hook it to your mower, either AYP or MTD should supply that adapter. Not much help for your problem, so I hope you get it figured out.

MTD bsgger/Mower 21 self propelled only number 1183AC.Need part that mower blade is attached to then to drive shaft. Can't find

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly

The part your looking for is called the BLADE ADAPTER. The part number should be: 753-0588

These are available at most any lawnmower repair / parts store. If you walk in woith what is left of your old one they can sell you an exact replacement. I am kind of old school when it comes to blade adapters. I always match old with the new before I buy them. I have been burned too many times from on line sites mainly with blade adapters. Most anything else available on the net is fine.

Here is a whole page of adapters:

Thanks for using FixYa.
