Hi my name is Eric,
I hope I can help you with your issue ,
First make sure its on the correct input for HD using the TV remote, then set the TV aspect/format/size to the full setting.
Now using the Dish/cable remote set it to stretch . also if using a cable box remote only select 1080i in the menu section Display/Output format

you may have to hit the zoom/aspect button on some channels but mostly it should be full screen this way

best of luck to you
Hope this helps, if it has solved your issue please click accept
But if you have more questions please respond and I will reply asap
Thanks
Eric

Hi I have the 42 inch Sony Bravia in my bedroom. The picture upstairs in the bedroom is too big for the tv if that makes sense.

Hello. It's not a picture setting, it's a format, or picture size setting. Look for a button on the remote labeled Format, or Size, or Zoom, or something similar. You want to select 16:9, or Full, or whatever fills the screen without zooming.

On My sony kp 53s75 tv the picture does not fill the whole screen on the HD channels

it is most likely normal--first generation HD sets were 4X3 which means picture is either small left and right or top and bottom; sets which have 16X9 offer full screen HD

I have a 2000 Sony 53 inch projection tv that turns on but there is no picture. You can see the video display but is scrambled.

It could be an issue with yoru DMD board, which are micromirrors, those are the ones that form the image. discountdashmerchantdotcom

Picture size/aspect ratio in HDTV and upconverting DVD

In the digital world, you can't have a 4:3 aspect ratio DVD title (720x480) on a 720p (1280 x 720) / 1080p (1920x1080) display without some kind of centering or stretching to some extent. (square vs rectangle) Now, on a 16:9 aspect ratio title (wide screen format) you should have any scaling issues regardless of the pixel resolution. Despite what the sales person told you, trans-coding ("upconverting") lower resolution titles to a higher resolution does not increase the quality of the image. Any attempt to do so would be only to try to reduce block noise and any kind pixelation at higher resolutions. (blurring square pixel blocks)

In the analog world, the quality of the image is based on the encoder and signal depth. If your TV excepts HD analog, you might be able to have your cake and eat it too. That would force your display to convert an analog signal into a digital resolution, letting the TV hardware do all the trans-coding. Manufactures are completely phasing out analog signal receiving, but might have the RGB RCA connectors for backwards compatibility. Eventually, it will not be supported and you will be forced to buy higher resolution content.

Screen goes black and resets during HD shows

I just posted this to another Sony owner:

Another point; HD Ready does not mean that it is HD compatible without the addition of an optional part.
The title only implies that it can be adapted to HD reception.
If you did not purchase it with the set, check your user guide to see what you need to make it whole.
You may have to seek this add-on on eBay since it is not guaranteed that Sony will still offer it.

You might want to check this:

Technical Details · 53-inch HD-ready rear-projection TV (doesn't include HD receiver); 48 x 57.5 x 25 inches (W x H x D)”

It's not a digital hi-def tv, so you either need a cable/sat box..or a converter once hi-def goes in and analog stops.
