Question about CyberLink Power DVD DX 8.0 for PC

1 Answer

Brand new OEM Dell OPtiplex with PowerDVD DX installed. The DVD icon only appears after a reboot...an hour later it is gone. After it disappears, DVDs will not load. If I load a DVD right after a reboot, when the icon IS showing, it will load and open in PowerDVD DX. But there are bad jitters and the DVD will stop about half-way through the movie. Hardware has been replaced & software reinstalled. All are updated. Any suggestions?

    Roonie Tunes,

I rated your response as Very Helpful basically because it reinforced my personal feeling that it's the PowerDVD software that is the root of the problem. Thanks for the support, the suggestions of other programs and the directions for downloading the codecs, too!

This is a brand-new OPtiplex, straight from the factory with all OEM, so everything should work. I tried opening my DVD in WMP but there was no sound, another conflict my research said PowerDVD might be responsile for. On my previous laptop I used VLC and was happy with it.

So, when the weekend rolls around and I have time to deal with this again I'll dump PowerDVD and hope the Dell will 'find' my new choice of media players more acceptable. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks for helping lower my frustration level,

Honesty is the best policy...

I have experienced nothing but heartache with PowerDVD... from a software standpoint, I would suggest using a different app all together (PowerDVD takes up so much RAM, and not very user friendly) Have you tried using the simple Windows Media Player? Download and install the K-Lite Codec pack first (I understand you are wanting to view from disks, but it can't hurt to have all codecs up-to-date), which will handle almost any format that comes your way (you can find the free download here:

http://www.codecguide.com/

If the hardware is new, uninstall the drivers and instead of using the provided software (which may be the problem) simply allow Windows to discover new hardware, and install a basic driver for you. You can then go to Window's Update and update the hardware driver to-date.

The result should be a functioning drive, with a functioning app to view with :)

If you are interested in also burning, keep in mind to keep the optics clean, and their are PLENTY of better apps than PowerDVD out there (DVDFab is one of the best for ease of use to burn custom or entire disks).

Again, just coming from a former PowerDVD user, I hope this helps!

Perfect! I am a firm believer that we all must take an active role in our own survival... there are plenty of apps out there to use, glad to hear you are willing to change out the PowerDVD rather than sit in frustration indefinitely, lol! Please let me know if there is anything I can do to get you back on track... have a great week!

The volume icon disappeared

At the bottom of your screen where all the icons are visible you should see an icon that looks like a pyramid. When you pass your mouse over it 'show hidden icons' should appear. Click that icon then click 'customize' to set icon behaviors.

For the Dell Optiplex GX270, you will utilize the Windows operating system default optical driver files.

Just physically connect your device and reboot your machine, the OS will pickup and automaticlly configure your device.

DVD-ROM drive reads CDs, but not DVDs Dell x-200

It shouldn't be a driver issue. DVD drives are natively supported by XP. What software do you have installed for playing DVD'? Windows Media Player 11 would be excellent, and it's free from Microsoft. PowerDVD and WinDVD are also good, but you have to buy them.

Unable to install a new powerdvd version

I imagine that it's trying to uninstall the older version to install the newer one, which it can't. NOTE: This is a desperate step. Delete the Cyberlink folder in C:\Program Files\; Go to Add/Remove Programs and attempt uninstall - it will say it can't uninstall, and ask you if oyu want to remove it from the program list. Click yes. Go to start->Search (or Find) and search for Cyberlink (make sure that Hidden and System files are being searched). Delete all Cyberlink files. Do the same, but with PowerDVD. Download and run CCleaner. Attempt to reinstall PowerDVD.
