Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Refrigertor part does not cool at all. Freezer part works until ice forms on the bottom then it cuts off. If you turn the refrigerator off for a couple of hours then it will start back working. Then the same thing starts all over again. It use to work for a couple of days now it only works for a couple of hours.

Your evaporator coils are probably not being defrosted by the auto defrost system. check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. How to checkeverything
http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php
Inmost newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control. Post your model number and I my can find a diagram to see what your model has.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicksand everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replacethe timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn thetimer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Frig & freezer not cooling enough. Ice forming in back of bottom freezer.

You need to have the defrost cycle checked.( heater, limit stat, timer) If the frig can't defrost air can't move across your coils to cool properly. To temporarily get by until you can get a repairman, use a blow dryer to melt the ice build up. Once melted it will work normally for about 2 days till it freezes up again.

Freezer works, but has some ice forming and refrigerator not cooling.

The refrigerator half of a refrigerator/freezer does not produce any cold! The refrigerator is cooled by transferring air from the freezer to the fridge. The fridge temperature setting controls a flapper between the freezer and the fridge. There should be a fan which blows air from the freezer into the fridge (through the damper).
If the ice forming in the freezer is concealing the cooling coil and air can not move through the coils, then the overall result will be a warm freezer (even though there may be ice in one location) and a warmer yet fridge. This can be tested by unplugging the fridge and allowing a complete thaw. If the ice is the cause of the problem, then it should work for a short while until it freezes up improperly again
:o).

Forming ice in the freezer vent going to bottom

It could also be your defrost heater. Look in side your fridge at the adjustment knob. It is in a box attached to the ceiling of your fridge. Look under this and you should see a plastic screw. Turn this screw until the motor cuts off. Leave it off for about 30 minutes. If motor turns back on then the defrost timer is working. The defrost heater is in the back panel of the freezer. The defrost heater looks like a long tube that runs under the freezer coils and half way up both sides. If after turning the screw on the defrost timer and the fridge doesn't turn back on then it is the defrost timer. The time is inside the box the adjustment knob is on.
