Hi

The part where the agitator attaches to the transmission shaft can become worn, and strip out inside the spline that allows the agitator to properly grip the shaft. Then the transmission shaft rotates back and forth as it should, but the agitator doesn't move properly.

If this happens, you need to change the dog kit inside the agitator. Remove the bolt holding the agitator in and lift it off the shaft. The agitator should pull apart and then you will see the dog kit inside.

You can check here by entering your specific model number to see what the kit looks like.

My 10+ yrs old Frigidaire gallery # GLTF1240AS front-loader drum won't agitate/spin

Check and see if the drive belt broke? On mechanical agitators using gears, a solenoid may fail and drive motor won't function.

Have a circa 1999 Kenmore Three-speed clothes washer (Top Loader) that keeps on agitating regardless of the cycle I put it in. Some cycles do nothing at all, but others (such as Rinse) make it just keep...

The clutch assembly works only to release the basket allowing it to spin during the drain and spin cycles. The drain function works only when the spin function works. If the machine also agitates during spin cycles, then the problem is in the transmission assembly not able to release the agitate gear from the agitate spline in the drive shaft.

Agitator stops while in spin cycle

Assuming that this is a basic Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain washer, the agitator is supposed to stop during the spin cycle.

Please see the following Whirlpool installation and service manual for top load machines.

If you look at the description of how the transmission works, there is an "Agitate Cam" that lifts the "Agitate Gear" out of contact with the main "Agitate Rack" when the machine goes into spin mode

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

I have found though that because of the friction between the agitate gear and main drive shaft, including the oil itself, the agitator may move while in spin mode.

Spin cycle with agitation motion occurring simultaneously

Hi again,

Appreciate the "Ask Me".

I believe the dampness is due to slow spin speed as you also have concluded. And I suspect that partial winding of the motor is the culprit. Hence, replacement is in order.

As to your concern why the agitator also operate during the spin setting, it could possibly be stuck or locked agitator dogs. Agitator dogs function is better explained here by another FixYa member, jsrock516.

Cheers.

Everything works but machine won't agitate

The pull at the bottom of transmission should turn both ways.. one way for spin the other way for agitate... if transmission turns both ways means not locked up and probley bad motor..
