How to adjust the gears of a raleigh bike 15 speed. oniy getting 4 speeds on back and 2 on front gear.

It is slipping. These big yamahas normally have slipping clutches. Mine slips, I've just learned to baby the clutch. Make sure you are in the most comfortable gear for the speed you are running at. Avoid rolling on full power at low speeds in higher gears. It's the nature of these great beasts. Clutch springs are too weak in these bikes, you may consider an aftermarket clutch spring assembly. The "shudder"(intermittent slipping) is caused by glazing. Make sure you are using the right lubricants for your bike, some synthetics can cause problems.

1)Adjust clutch cable correctly, check
2)Pull the clutch assembly apart, if there is little wear then you have "glazed" plates, clean each plate with 600 grit sandpaper and reassemble...get a new clutch spring assembly (weakened spring causes "shudder", slippage, and consequently glazing). Reassemble and adjust correctly (many forums out there with info).
3)Replace the full assembly and adjust correctly at setup. Adjust regularly....I check adjustment about every 300-500 miles.
4)Pay a shop to do these things for you.

I have a top speed of 75 mile on a 1997 xj 600n, its running 16 48 gearing, what is standard, has no restrictors in the carbs, all 4 plugs and brownish colour, all exausts are same temp when warmed up,


How many RPM are you turning in top gear at top speed? If you're not red lined, your engine is not pulling the gearing. You may be overgeared. You an try dropping to a 15 on the front. It's cheaper to change the front gear. See what it does. It may peak but at a slower speed. Then again,it depends on how many RPM you pick up. You could bring the gearing into a range where the engine can now pull the gear and actually increase the top speed of the bike by dropping down a gear. I've seen it happen many time. If not, you'll have to do something to get the power of the engine up.

Just got Raleigh Detour 4.5 Women's with Shimano EF-50- EZ shifter and no clue how to use all speeds and levers??? Help...any manuals???


Where did you buy the bike? Any dealer who sells a bike is more than happy to instruct you on the use and maintenance of it. I will give you a brief, lesson-left hand controls the front brake and gears, right hand controls the rear (R=rear, easy way to remember). Front derailleur is the ranges 1 (closest to the bike are always easiest) and the farther away from the frame get harder but make the bike go faster. The rear derailleur has more than likely 7 cogs again same rule as above. So always pedal forward and do not go small gear in front to small gear in rear, & large gear in front to large gear in rear because your chain will stretch from too much stress and it doesn't do you any good.
Do not pedal backwards because unless your chain is directly on the correct gear you will chip teeth on your gears.
But, do go for lessons on your bike, to learn maintenance tips and how remove your wheels, etc.
Remember bikes are not toys, they are machines and need to maintained to get the full enjoyment out of them.

When I shift from 2 to 3 or 3 to 4 when I am getting on it, it seems to shift out and rev the engine. What could be the problem? I had this problem in the sping time and shattered the valve spring in 3...


I don't understand you terminology of "shift out". I assume you're talking about missing a gear, it doesn't shift into the gear and the engine revs out of control. You didn't tell me what year or model bike you're talking about either.

If you bike is a Big Twin equipped with either a four speed or five speed transmission, your shifting mechanism in the case of a four speed or shifter pawl in the case of a five speed may need adjusting. If the ******* mechanism is not adjusted correctly, it may not be turning the shifter cam quite far enough when upshifting. This is a job that is best left to an experienced mechanic. It's delicate adjustment and in the case of a four speed, you'll have to take the inner primary off to adjust the shifing mechanism.

I need instructions on when to change gears on a 15 speed, 24'' girls bike. I bought it second hand, and have no idea which gears to use when.


biggest in the back and smallest in the front gives you the fastest accel and is used for uphill as well.. smallest back and biggest front is used for top speed....

The rear cassette is only a part of the solution. The front gearset also comes with a variety of ring/teeth configurations.
Plenty on new bikes come with a 'compact' gearset (2 front rings, 10 speed rear cassette). That is generally a lower gear ration to aid in hill climbing.
The rear cassettes are easily interchanged (must be same brand as what the hub uses). Of the 3 you listed; the 11-26 would be "Fastest".

If you want to go fast, and are fit enough to power it at speed for a good duration... look for a large crank ring (greatest number of teeth) and a small cassette # (like the 11-26 you listed). It's a sinple ratio calculation. What you're looking for is the most amount of rear wheel rotations per crank rotation. That is achieved by a big (lots of teeth) front ring and a small (not many teeth) rear cassette ring.

While at the bike store, put the bike in it's highest gear (biggest ring on the crankset, smallest ring on the wheel cassette). Lift the rear wheel off the ground and count the amount of rear wheel rotations for 1 crank rotaion.

A triathalon/time-trial bike will come with a ratio of about 5.5-6.5 rotatotions of the rear wheel for each rotation of the crank.
An endurance road bike (with compact gearset) might come with about 4.25 rear wheel rotations for each crank rotation.

Tri/TT bikes are made to put the rider in the most areodynamic position possible thereby reducing the wind drag and making pedaling easier (so you can manage a higher gear ratio). Endurance road bikes are designed to put the rider in a confortable position (more upright) for all day riding.

Get the bike shop to fit you properly to the bike you choose, not all shops offer this. There are professional bike fitters that can help you when you get close.

The chain wants to jump off while trying to change gears


There are several things that could be wrong:

Shifter out of adjustment

Chain worn

Chain and gear(s) worn

Shifter out of adjustment:
Try adjusting the cable tension by turning the barrel (the part between the cable and the shifter). Count the number of turns and reset it to its original position if this doesn't solve it.

Chain worn:
Chains wear out. hold a ruler up to it, with one end centered on a pin. 12" away, another pin should like up very very very close to the 12" mark. If not, it's probably worn out and needs to be replaced. No way around it. Some say chains are good for 500 miles only. Your mileage may vary. (keep reading...)

Chain worn and gear(s) worn:
If the bike has been ridden witha worn chain for a while, it will make the gears in the back wear faster too, and a new chain alone will not work. If this is the case, you need a new chain and new gears in the back. Often, gears in the back are replaced all at once in a 'cassette'. You'll have to make sure your front gears aren't worn out too!
