2nd Monitor Installation Problem

I'm trying to connect my laptop to a second monitor and to a television(not at the same time of course). I've tried going through desktop properties and settings but I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I've never connected a second monitor so I have no idea on how to do it so far. I have a VGA, USB and IEEE 1394 ports. I tried using an AV jack cable from a digital camera and connected it to the headphone jack and to a television. I only get sound but no display.
What is the best way to connect to a televesion? Is it possible to connect with AV jacks? Maybe I did something wrong.

- It's a Sony Vaio VGN-N130G.I managed to connect a second monitor to the laptop. I'm still having trouble on how to connect the computer to a television. I don't have a TV Out jack. That is most likely what I'm going to need isn't it?
The OUT Ports that I have are MIC, Headphones, VGA, IEEE, USB. The television I want to connect to is an HDTV 56 Inch with S Video, AV, and HDMi. I don't see any VGA.

give me the make and model of your laptop
the best way if you have a tv out jack,(usually a yellow rca jack on the laptop)
to connect an external monitor you need to connect the cable from the monitor to the female port on tne laptop
power up the monitor press
Fn + the extenal monitor buttom(in the f keys ie f4)

My laptop doesn't do display. All the way it is black or blank screen. But when i connect it to the second monitor it has display itself. What could be wrong. I tried removing battery and then put it back on but still it doesn't have any display.
