Question about Philips Magnavox 9P6034C 60" Rear Projection Television

Philips Magnavox 54 in rear projetion TV

I've had my TV for about ten years now and notice the picture is getting more and more cloudy. I tried adjusting all of the settings to clear the picture up, but nothing seems to work. A friend of mine has the same TV and had the fluid in the 3 color guns replaced and the picture looks great.
My question is, can I purchase the fluid and change it my self? I have experience servicing computers and fiber optics communication equipment. So tools and skill isn't and issue, and I know that I can purchase the service manual to guide me thrugh the work.

Darrt, it`s a big, messy, dirty job but of course anyone can do it if they decide to do so, you MUST get the service manual but it won`t be all that much help, the tubes have to be removed from the set, it`s usually the blue & green that get contaminated, the service manual will explain the procedure to get the fluid out, (which screws not to remove etc.) it won`t tell you to mark the position of each lateral magnet, it won`t tell you that if you move/break the paint on the lateral magnets that your screwed, that yoke position is critical, etc. because they presume your a tv tech. Be advised that you should NOT use Philips coolant when you get ready to refill your tubes, use RCA or some other brand so it won`t repeat the problem, good luck you`ll need it, if you decide to tackle it ask lots of questions on here, BMW Rider

I have a Philips Magnavox 9P6034C 60 in. Rear Projection Television the whit bulb is gone out where do i get another one

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Philips magnavox 55" rear projection tv problems

Your TV most likely has one of two possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc

Screen is bowed or warped.
The other common problem is cloudy lens fluid. After many years the coolant in the blue and green lens will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, bright white, etc. You may even see halos around video.

What are they talking about when they say you need to change the fuild in your tv. I have 60" philips magnvox that is about 10 years old

The projection TV sets have a coolant that surrounds the CRT picture tubes. It is used to keep them cool when they are lit up. After 5 or so years the fluid gets cloudy and needs to be drained and replaced. If you do it correcly your set will have the best picture you have seen in a long time. Check with the site www.TvRepairKits.com for the fluid and a photo instruction guide.

That model is famous for having bacterial contamination in the CRT coolant causeing halos, and dim pictures with bad overall color issues. You can look into the lens of the CRTs when the set is laying and if the coolant looks cloudy or has any growth there you will notice it right away, and changing the coolant will restore color, clarity and brightness.
