Optical drive not recognized by windows

Optical drive is recognized in bios, but not after windows xp boot up. I deleted the upper and lower registry filters, swapped cables, drives, doesn't fix it. It's a problem with windows, I just don't know what the problem is. Does anyone know if there has been an update that could cause this?

I tried everything that you posted, but nothing was really related to the problem I'm having. See, my optical drive isn't showing up ANYWHERE EXCEPT BIOS. Windows acts like it's not even there. Not only is the drive not listed in device manager or my computer, BUT my SATA ports aren't showing in device manager either. The only interface listed in my device manager is IDE/ATA.

This is the registry fix you're referring to, correct?
Have you visited windows update since you removed the filters? Do so, and they may offer you new drivers. You may need to manually update the drivers, if no joy there. For help updating the drivers, see this guide.
I'm assuming you have checked in device manager and the drive is not correctly detected there. If you can see it there, uninstall it and reboot the system.
Also see standard MS articles here, here, here. You might try the clean boot described there to see if it's some kind of software driver conflict that's causing it to fail to be seen. Or change the drive configuration to dma.
If that doesn't lead to a solution, I'd consider running sfc /scannow on the system to check for corruption of the system files.
Good luck.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

Hello! My Acer Aspire 4736 Laptop is not recognizing any CD/DVD. It has TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L633B ATA Device driver installed but i dont know wahts the porblem

Hi,

The CD/DVD drive or optical drive is not reading any discs due to either hardware malfunction or operating system registry inputs. To correct the issue, follow the below steps.

- Reload BIOS (Basic Input Output System) default settings by pressing F10, Del.. (depends on what key is designed to access the BIOS setup)
- Use a bootable disc (like Operating system disc). Try to boot to the disc, if successful, your optical drive is surely working fine. If not, you need to reinsert it or replace it.
- If you are able to boot to disc successfully, it means that the Operating System needs to be reinstalled or upper and lower filter of the cd/dvd drive in the registry needs to be deleted.

Here are some links that you can check to resolve the issue without reinstalling the Operating System.

http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems/en-us
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461 (in this lick, follow the instructions under "Let me fix it myself" section)

Hope this helps.

My cd dvd room isnt working. i think that the main promblem would be the drivers.thank you a lot

Hi,

I am one of the technician trained and experienced with different computer manufacturer.

For your issue here are some helpful steps on how you can isolate the issue.

To check the functionality of the optical drive, try to boot outside windows using a Bootable cd (like OS) to check if your optical drive is working. This will isolate driver and OS issue to hardware issue.

If your optical drive boots up outside windows then the issue is with the software.

- check the device manager if there are bangs in the optical drive (! or ?).
- try to delete the optical drive in the the device manager
- delete the upper and lower filters in the registry
note: before deleting a registry make sure you have it back up.
- restart your computer.

Here are the steps on how you can delete the upper and lower filters in the registry
- click windows logo or start
- choose run
- type regedit
- look for the following folder
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318
-delete the upper and lower filter
- then restart the computer.

Disclaimer: If your not familiar accessing or changing registry file, please contact the manufacturer of the computer as it can damage the operating system.

hope this will help resolving the issue.

Thank you for choosing Fixya

My toshiba satelite 1130-s155 will not recognize the cd-rom , I will not play cd or dvd or burn . It will eject . any tips ? thanks

Hi. I would suggest deleting the upper and lower filters on your registry. Follow this to delete the upper and lower filters on the registry:

  1. Click the Start button and click in the Start Search box2_bing.gif.
  2. Type regedit, and then press the <Enter> key.
Note: The User Account Control window may appear. If so, click Continue. The Registry2_bing.gif Editor window appears.
  3. Click the arrow next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
  4. Click the arrow next to SYSTEM.
  5. Click the arrow next to CurrentControlSet.
  6. Click the arrow next to Control.
  7. Click the arrow next to Class.
  8. Click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
  9. In the right-hand pane of the window, click UpperFilters.
  10. Click Edit on the menu bar.
  11. Click Delete. The Confirm Value Delete window appears.
  12. Click Yes.
  13. In the right-hand pane of the window, click LowerFilters.
  14. Click Edit on the menu bar.
  15. Click Delete. The Confirm Value Delete window appears.
  16. Click Yes.
  17. Click File, and then click Exit.
  18. Click the Start button.
  19. Click the arrow to the right of the lock icon.
  20. Select Restart.
If this doesnt fix the issue this might be a already a hardware issue and if you could open up your DVD or Optical drive, try clening the Optical Lens by using cotton buds, if still this dowsnt fix the issue consider replacing your Optical Drive. Hope this helps

Cd rom wont recognize installation cd

Hi. You could try updating the driver for your Optical Drive and Deleting the Upper and lower filters by accessing the registry tool. follow this:

1. go to start search or RUN if you're using XP then type in there regedit then press enter
2. go to this folder HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
3. Look for Upper and Lower Filter files then delete them by doing a right click then delete. sometimes you could only find one of them but its fine, after deleting those files you should restart your computer

if this doesnt work, you should consider replacing the Optical Drive Already because maybe this already a hardware issue. or if it a hardware issue you could try cleaning the optical lens with cotton buds.

Hope this helps

SATA / Optical Drive Not Recognized

In my travels through this nightmare called Windows, there have been some real issues. I ran into this same problem with XP with SP3, What I did was set up a virtual machine running Vista Premium and loaded the SATA Optical with the Vista OS which recognized it right off. I was able to use the drive just fine when using the Vista in the virtual machine but was not seen in XP. Have not found a decent work around this....just waiting for Windows 7 to come out so I dump both XP and Vista and start over learning another new curb, but at least I've been told that a huge amount of drivers are to be loaded into the new OS...we'll see.

I have a Compaq PC and yesterday it stopped recogzning my DVD rom drive. What could be the problem?

There would be serveral reasons for not recognizing the dvd..
-> May be the Problem with the wire not connected properly in the tower
->May be the Problem with Operating System.
-> May be the Problem in the registry with upper/lower filters.

Solutions :

-> Check with the wire properly connected or not opening the cabinet.
check whether the dvd rom detected in bios.
if detected check with rocognizing the dvd rom drive in Operating system.

-> Try Reinstalling the operating system(if detected in bios & not recognised in Operating system).

-> Try editing registry by clicking on Start -> Run ->type regedit and push enter.
->Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
->
Delete Upper filter and Lower filter , and reboot the computer. The optical drive shows up under My Computer.

HP CD/DVD optical drive is not recognized

I found that there was a firmware conflict caused by the installation of iTUNES. I uninstalled and cleared the upper and lower filters in the registry and the internal DVD-Rom is recognized. First I cleared the registry and the drive was recognized after a hard boot. So Far no twitches. Knock on wood.
