Question about Philips GoGear SA5285/37 Digital Media Player

Philips GoGear 8GB stall at update screen

The firmware update just runs and runs and never finishes. How long should it take?  I can see my songs via My computer, but if I try to play or delete them I get an error about the path being invalid.

Is there a way to either format the player or do some kind of factory reset other than the reset button.

I read somewhere about holding down the volume + key before connecting the player with it off, should delete all the songs. It connected but the songs appear intact, (but aren't). Another place said to hold down the "loop" key and connect the player. Again not able to get past the "update" screen. It loads about halfway and seems to stall.

I just repeated the steps above on more than one computer until it finally connected and showed the songs, then I deleted everything, restarted it and voila` all the menu's showed up. Then the first thing I did was reset to factory settings. After that it worked perfectly. I don't really know what combination really fixed it, but I kept hitting the reset button, restarting while holding down the volume + key and the <loop> key until it eventually responded.

Philips go gear 8GB text backwards?


I had this same problem. I had put GoGear Opus software on my SA52xx player. When I uninstalled the Opus software and resinstalled the SA52x, the problem went away.

Philips GoGear Firmware Upgrade
You need to get the latest firmware upgrade from the Philips website:
1. Go to www.philips.com/support
2. Enter your country/language
3. Enter your model # SA6045 or whatever
4. Click on the link for your exact model # (the one w/o the "B" in it)
5. Click on "Software & Drivers"
6. Download the updated "Device/Firmware Manager"
7. Once installed, open the Philips Device Manager
8. Click on the "Update" tab, then the "Update" button (with your mp3 player connected to the computer, of course)
9. Your Mp3 players firmware will update automatically
If you do not have the latest version of the Philips Device Manager installed (the latest is the version from the Philips website), then clicking the "Update" button will give you a false positive saying "The firmware on your device is already up to date."

Recovery Mode for Philips' GoGear
Disconnect the player from the PC, and make sure the mp3 player is turned off. Hold in the volume + button on the mp3 player, and reconnect the player to your pc while holding in the volume + button. Continue holding the volume + for 10-15 seconds until a "Found New Hardware Wizard" pops up. It should recover your device if there isn't anything internally wrong with the player. Warning: this procedure will result in your songs being erased off the player, so they will have to be reloaded.

My problem


lucky - make sure you are not using MAC or Windows Vista. Make sure the software is installed. Try another usb port in your computer. Try a usb port on another computer with same OS.
Suji - Recovery Mode for Philips' GoGear
Open the Philips Device Manager (Start à All Programs à Philips Digital Audio Player à SAXXX à Philips Device Manager) and click on the “Repair” tab.  Then click on the “Repair” button to start the repair process.  Most of the time, when your player is in that state, the Device Manager will not recognize that your GoGear is plugged in.  If this is the case: Disconnect the player from the PC, and make sure the mp3 player is turned off. Hold in the volume + button on the mp3 player, and reconnect the player to your pc while holding in the volume + button. Not adding songs?


You will need to reformat the GoGear in Windows Media Player, but do a firmware upgrade first - open the Philips Device Manager and click on the Update tab. Then click the update button. After the firmware upgrade is done, open windows Media Player.
REFORMAT FOR WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER - Erases Everything: Connect your GoGear to the computer and open Windows Media Player. Click on the Sync tab. Pull down the drop down menu underneath the Sync tab by moving your cursor over the Sync tab and left clicking on the little black arrow underneath the Sync tab. Highlight "Philips Go Gear SAXXX" (wording may vary slightly), and then select "Format." - this should erase everything, and make your player properly read in Windows Media Player.

Make sure you back up all songs on the GoGear before attempting this solution.

1) Back up all files on the GoGear
2) Open up Philips Device Manager (Start --> All Programs --> Philips)
3) Click on the Repair Tab, and look for a msg that says connect the player while holding the volume + button
4) Disconnect the GoGear from the computer and turn the GoGear off - hold in the volume + button and continue to hold it as you reconnect the GoGear to the computer; after holding the volume + button for up to 20 or 30 seconds, a window will open up saying that your device is being repaired (now you can let go of the volume + button); after the repair is successfully complete, your GoGear will be good as new

Now you can do the firmware upgrade that will prevent this problem from occuring in the future. Open up Philips Device Manager and click the Update tab. This problem was caused because most GoGear's were designed for Windows XP with Media Player 10 (which is no longer the latest standard).

You must do a firmware upgrade to resolve this issue.

Open Philips Device Manager (Go to Start--> all Programs--> Philips...), and click on Update tab

You can get it from www.usasupport.philips.com
It will delete all songs off your player, so be forewarned
Enter your model number on the website, click the link on next page that says SA 5125/37 w/o a "b" on the end
Click on Software and drivers tab
Click on firmware upgrade software - instructions enclosed

Songs go into a scattered order.


It is possible that the memory or settings have been corrupted. Install and run the Philips Device Manager from the product CD.
Select the restore / repair option and follow the on-screen prompts.

This will re-install the firmware and format the player.
When the process has finished, restart the player. It will initiallize and then shut down again. Switch on again and you'll get an "updating" message. The player will now be empty. This should also cure the alphabetical list problem.

There are a few possible answers:
1)Start simple - disconnect the GoGear from the computer - let it update - then reconnect it to the computer; if this fails, restart your computer and try syncing again

2)You need a firmware upgrade to make the device compatible with your computer: just open up Philips Device Manager (Start --> All Programs --> Philips) - if you don't see it, then re-run the installation CD or grab the "Device/Firmware Manager" from the Philips website; click on the update tab

3) The songs have Digital Rights Management (DRM) protection.Try re-downloading the songs without DRM protection.

4) The songs are in a format not recognized by the GoGear. The GoGear, for instance, will not take iTunes files b/c they are AAC format. With MP3 files, the player supports 32 –320kbps. With WMA: 5-192kbps with sampling rate 8.0kHz up to 44.1kHz. Right click the song file, and select "Save As", and then change the format of the song file. Or, redonwload, in the above-said format.
