Question about Dryers

1 Answer

I have a Whirlpool GGW9879PW0 gaas dryer. When starting cold I hear the click of the igniter, the igniter glows and the burner ignites. When starting warm or when the burner cycles the burner never comes one/igniter never glows even though I hear the clicks. Thermistor and/or thermal cut off?

It's likely one of the coils is opening a break in the coil as the coil heats up. This coil will shrink when cool and be able to run again. The number for the coil kit, which will replace ALL the coils, for your machine is 279834.

Disconnect power and turn off gas before working on this dryer. Working on gas dryers is not recommended for people who are not professionals.

Disconnect Power. Lift Cover on lint filter. Remove two Phillips screws taking care NOT to allow them to fall into the blower housing. Place putty knife in the seam between the top and front panel about 2” in from either side. Push in on clip while pulling control panel forward and tilting putty knife handle up, all at the same time. Same on opposite side. Raise top all the way.

Looking down inside dryer on left and right see a 5/16” hex head screw about 6 inches down. Remove each side while holding front panel in place. Pull top of front panel about 3 inches forward from sides and then pull up. This will disengage the front panel from lower pressure clips and allow you to turn it sideways and expose the dryer interior. Reverse process to re-assemble. Take careful note of belt configuration BEFORE removing it. Draw a diagram of its travel.

Motor and idler pulley for dyer will be on right. Gas components will be on left. Replace All coils with Kit Number listed above. Take care not to touch or hit the ignitor or you will be replacing it also. It is VERY brittle.

Reverse process to re-assemble.

Service on gas appliances should be undertaken by professionals only due to the danger of gas leakage which can cause fires or death by asphyxiation.

Check to see if there is a glow at the burner when you start it up. If it glows then the igniter is good. If not it could be a thermal fuse, bad igniter, flame sensor or a bad cycling thermostat. If it glows then it could be the gas valve coils.

if you hear the valve clicking but no gas the valve is bad.when the burner lights theres a probe that senses that it is lit and sends a microvoltage back to the controller to tell its lit.check to make sure all ground wires are grounded to a clean metal surface.

Igniter starts to glow for 3-5 sec while making noise every minute or so

Check the thermocouple it is going bad or already has and that is why the gas valve is not staying open.

first check to make sure the venting isn't blocked by lint. second, check the igniter, if it is orange in color you need to replace it, it should glow white.

My whirlpool gas dryer model no LGR7646A has no heat, not sure iof this has a pilot or not, if not could it be some sort of safety switch taht shut down the dryer

I am 99% sure it is electronic ignition. There a dryers that had pilots but those are very old. So what you can do is start with the basics. Make sure the gas valve for the dryer is on and there is gas pressure coming from the connector. Make sure there is no debris blocking gas flow in the gas line. If the dryer has a removable door or burner inspection hole on the bottom pull it loose with a screw driver otherwise you will need to remove the back cover of the dryer. Turn on the dryer and watch for the hot surface igniter to come on. It will glow very bright then you should hear the gas solenoid valve click and the burner should come on. If the solenoid opens and the igniter does not come on inspect the burner orfice for any blockage. If the igniter does not come on then you will need to test the igniter for the proper ohm reading with a fluke meter. You will need to verify the igniter is getting power. If the igniter tests good it might be a bad solenoid valve(there are two) or a grounding issue.

hi bob , with the dryer on switch the unit from air dry to 1 of the heating positions ,did you hear a click? If so your problem is with your burner,if not you will have a thermostat/thermal fuse problem.possible burner issues include bad ignitor, ignition sensor .

Pilot Light? Are you sure? All the gas dryers I've ever worked on were pilot-less. There should be a glow-type igniter that heats up when the dryer is turned on. When it reaches a certain current potential a gas valve is opened and the burner ignites. How old is this dryer? Maybe this is something I've never seen before. Is the dryer working at all? If not, here's a way you can narrow down the possibilities of problems:

You need to gain access to view the inside of the dryer, first. With the dryer plugged in, push the start button. If you hear a "click" and the igniter still does not come on, you probably have a bad igniter. If you don't hear a "click", the radiant heat senor is probably bad causing the igniter not to glow. You have to listen very carefully for the clicking noise, though. It's not very distinct with some dryers. Now, the igniter can glow sometimes and still be bad. The way your dryer works; it looks for a certain current potential (roughly 2.7 to 3.2 amps depending on type of igniter) on the igniter before the gas valve opens to ignite. If the igniter is weak, the gas valve may not open. This is a safety feature that prevents gas from leaking into your home. I hope this may help you. Let me know if I can assist further.

Yes, that is most likely the problem. Once the glow bar igniter glows so hot, the switch opens & drops power to the igniter.(The radiant sensor has continuity while cold & open when a flame is present.) At the same time, by opening it redirects power to the valve coils allowing them to open & gas flow to the burner assembly. The dying glow of the igniter fires the gas. However, if your igniter glows, the radiant sensor is good. In this case, you'd need to replace the gas valve solenoids.

After a few heating cycles the burner does not ignite

The problem you are describing is usually associated with a bad gas valve coil. The dryer runs normally until it gets hot, then starts making a strange clicking noise. After it cools down, the dryer runs normally again. The gas valve coils (there are two of them) usually run about $20 a piece. I recommend replacing both of them at the same time just to be sure. I hope this helps.
