Shut your computer all the way down. As soon as you turn it on, start hitting F8 about 3-4 times, that will take you to an advanced options menu. Select "Last known good configuration" and that should work

How is installing windowxp

To install windows xp, put the windows installation cd or the computer and reboot your system. A message will come up telling you if you want to boot from the cd and click any key. Then follow the messages that are in the bottom of the screen. F8 to accept the terms. Make sure you delete the old partition if you do not want to keep the old operating system and data.

You PC is going to need a windows rebuild

  1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access bios the and change the boot order. Also some PC let you select the boot device by hitting f12 when the system is booting up, if this is the case make sure your window cd is in then boot from your cd or dvd drive
  2. Once you have made this change in your bios you will see press any key to install from your xp cd

  3. press ender to start the Windows Setup. Do not choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you do not want to load Recovery Console).
  4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
  5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.
  6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

Windows wont boot. it keeps coming up to start in safe mode, etc. then loops into it again. any help?? I don't have the cd which came with the computer. I get a message "unmountable boot volume"

Windows operating system might have changed recently. You may need to repair install the operating system. Does the recovery of computer work? I could say if you don't have the repair CD , you could get one from Microsoft. Microsoft customer service person ask you some questions about the legal copy of the software on the computer. If you had registeted microsoft software then it would cost you $10 for CD.

Computer boots up then shows windows 98 scrren

you may face either harddisk failure, a driver problem or virus infection:

tools: original win98-cd (or a bootable image

version of it), antivir-software on cd!

- please check whether it is possible to boot from win98-cd, with cd-rom support, not from harddisk.

(such option should be availabe after bios-load is over)

if not:

leave the setup process without fully installing
(press F3 button when asked for repair or install option)

in both cases :

type at the dos-prompt:

c:\win98/win

(command for changing to harddisk, windows-folder, booting windows from harddisk, but without loading all the drivers as usually)

win98 should come up in protected mode or give error messages.

- access cd-drive and execute vir-scan.
- delete and/or repair infected files
- turn down, attempt to reboot from hd
- if still impossible reboot from win98-cd,
run repair of installation and try once again
standard boot

problem solved? if not, take down error messages consult fixya again!

Sony vaio not loading windos

Try booting XP with the installation CD & use the recovery console to boot the laptop.

From the Setup CD-ROM

Insert the Setup compact disc (CD) and restart the computer. If prompted, select any options required to boot from the CD.
When the text-based part of Setup begins, follow the prompts; choose the repair or recover option by pressing R. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access from the Recovery Console. When prompted, type the Administrator password. At the system prompt, type Recovery Console commands; type help for a list of commands, or help commandname for help on a specific command.

To exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer, type exit.
