Question about Microwave Ovens

Sharp Microwave Oven

I bought a Sharp Model R-403 KKT, Serial Number 59333, microwave oven somewhere around April of 2007. About 2 months ago as I was warming a covered plate, I heard a loud cracking sound from the microwave oven. When I turned to look the covered part next to the light was on fire. I immediately unplugged the unit and stopped using it. Have there been any other reports of such things happening? Since I no longer have the original carton and receipt I cannot return it to Wal-Mart where I bought it. What are the possibilities that Sharp will replace this unit?

I received a Sharp R 403 KK as a gift on Xmas 06. I have the same problem as the other person. When I turned the oven on it sparked and smoked a bit at the waveguide cover. It burnt a hole in the cover. I unplugged it and have not used it since. A Green

We have a a Sharp Model R-403 KKT which was bought new in 2006.  Yesterday while heating sausage links on a paper plate, there was a crackling sound and flames began shooting from the inside of the microwave port.  We will not be using it again.

Ditto on the same problem. I purchased this oven 1/7/07. Today, after setting the clock, I turned it on for 5 seconds to be sure all was well. It made a strange noise then flashed inside. I unplugged it and looked inside. There was a hole in the waveguide cover. Ther is only a one year warranty on this item so I'm out on that. I won't be purchasing another Sharp item!

I bought a Sharp Microwave from Lowes three months ago when the GE I had quit working after 15 years.. Last night I was cooking a potato and the thing caught on fire. The whole interior was flaming. I know air feeds fire, so I turned the oven off and just let it burnout. At that time the oven was still working. After the fire went out I went to clean up the mess and the oven no longer worked. The potato was in an oven safe dish and there was no reason for this to happen. I'm going to get in touch with Lowe's today and see if they will refund my money on this dangerous fire hazard. I will replace the microwave but not with another Sharp.

Mt Sharp Carousel microwave oven made a loud cracking sound when I turned it on. Is this product defective?

  • ashleyone Jan 14, 2009

Yep, same deal here, I was microwaving some tea and there was suddenly all sorts of electrocution going on inside... and now a hole has been burned in the waveguide cover. Even if I got a new waveguide cover, I don't know how I'd be supposed to affix it. Did anyone learn whether Sharp would call this a design defect and offer replacements?

  • jennahbound Mar 05, 2009

Same model, same problem - hole in the waveguide cover. OK with some things, but definately not
butter. Haven't even had this 2 years.
Isn't anything made to last anymore? Unfortunately after reading
reviews of other brands, I can't seem to find anything with
consistently good comments. Guess I'll just hope for the best, but
    definately not another Sharp!

My problem was similar - Sharp model R-426HS, about 2 years old. Oven was clean and being used to heat up milk in a cup. Flames shot through and around the metal plate catching the inside of the oven on fire and ruining it. Sharp sent me to a repair shop that declared the cause to be moisture that built up behind the plate causing the arcing. This is a dangerous product defect! If it had been left unattended, the fire might have spread inside the wooden cabinet. Ltt's see if Sharp does the right thing in replacing the oven. And they should recall them due to the defect!

Quite often this is due to grease or food particles stuck on or behind the waveguide cover.

The waveguide cover is usually about the size of a playing card and often held in place by a plastic rivet.

It can be fragile, and the metal edges of the oven behind it can be sharp, so be careful!

The cover and the metal behind it should be cleaned with a mild, non-ammonia cleaner.

If the cavity metal of the oven is chipped or charred, it will have to be sanded smooth and clean.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart or Lowe's.

If your waveguide cover is burned, it will need to be replaced.

Sharp R403 microwave internal electrical short/fire

This is a simple problem & solution.

Quite often this is due to grease or food particles stuck somewhere in the cavity of the oven or stuck on or behind the waveguide cover.

The waveguide cover (also called a spatter shield) is usually about the size of a playing card and often held in place by a plastic rivet.

It can be fragile, and the metal edges of the oven behind it can be sharp, so be careful!

The cover and the metal behind it should be cleaned with a mild, non-ammonia cleaner.

If the cavity metal of the oven is chipped or charred, it will have to be sanded smooth and clean and dried thoroughly.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

Since your waveguide cover is damaged, it will need to be replaced. It provides important protection for the magnetron.

Microwave exploded.

Did it make a popping noise, like a .22 cal pistol? Probably one of the larger capacitors on the power supply blew up.
