Question about Ariete Cafe Retro Espresso Machine

1 Answer

My Ariete Mirage coffee machine won't grind the beans - it makes plenty of grinding noise but then stop and turns on the red light indicating there are no coffee beans.I have decalified the machine on numerous occassions to no avail. Also I am having problems finding a service centre. I live in Hull. The machine is under gaurantee but I bought it in Germany and is not practical to return it to Germany for ovious reasons.

SOURCE: my machine will not produce

If the hot water flow is completely blocked by scale then you will not be able to run a descaling product through it, because the worst scale accumulates on the exit grid. You need to put the machine upside down, unscrew the exit grid (using a special 'snake eyes' 2-pin screwdriver), remove the grid. Then descale it and remove the dirt that accumulated underneath. Reassmenle the grid and run some descaling product through the whole machine.

SOURCE: seems like there is to much pressure building up

I tried poking holes and found out it did not work to restore the flow, I really needed to unscrew the filter, because there was some serious scale & dirt buildup behind it. I could not find a suitable screwdriver to unscrew the filter so I made one myself by filing an old flat screwdriver, and I used a small drill to enlarge the holes the the screw. It worked.

Bean hopper is full, machine starts to grind the coffee but right before it starts to pull the shot, it stops & says "add beans to hopper".

the add beans to hopper signal most likely is triggered by the machine not sensing enough load put on the grinder (hence it thinks its out of beans) , this most likely is set by the grind (fine/course ) id say the grind is set to an improper size and the automatic sensor is picking up on that
another thing is the coffee / if its way too moist and not dry enough then its also going to trip the sensor as well

Our Saeco Vienna Superautomatica sounds like it's grinding beans but keeps running until the red 'bean' light comes on and we have to shut the machine off. Any suggestions?

The grinder is timing out and stops if the beans do not enter the grinder. This happens because:
1- The grinder outlet is clogged and fresh beans cannot pass through the burrs.
2- The grind setting is too fine and helping clogging in the grinding chamber or the ground coffee outlet.
3- Operator may have been using dark roast oily beans. Like it or not, the dark roast oily beans do not make stronger espresso. Please stop using such beans in fully automatic espresso machines.
4- The grinder has already made over 2000 grinds and the burrs are blunted and not grinding beans as needed.
To solve this malfunction, clean the grinder. Make sure the grinder outlet to the doser is cleaned. This outlet passage is about 2 inches or more. To clean it, lay the machine on its back (water tank side) to allow better view of cleaning the doser and the passage of coffee from the grinder to the doser. Use the link below to find instructions for cleaning the grinder and replace the burrs.

Grinder makes noise but keep spinning until red

Sounds like you have a blockage in you grind passage. Try removing the brew group. Then inside on the roof of the machine where the brew unit was setting there is a drop chute where the coffee is dropped into the brew unit. . From the left side of the drop chute pull down and back, and it will drop coffee. . This will clear an opening that relieves pressure on the passage. There is a passage inside the drop chute area that goes to the grinder. Vacuum it out. It will be on the right side of the drop chute. Once that is cleared go to the bean hopper. If you have 2 knobs in the bean hopper. Turn the small knob to the minus, (if you don't have one, disregard). Turn the large knob to the largest number. You can turn the knob to a larger number any time but it has to be grinding to turn to a smaller number. Now replace everything and make your coffee. Once you have made your coffee you can turn the knob back to a number that was higher than the one you had it on, but only when the grinder is running.

Hello. I have a saeco vienna superautomatic

This happens due to condensation caused by steam developed at the end of the grinding cycle. Make sure that the grinding chamber is completely cleaned and dried before using the grinder.

  1. Turn the whole bean chamber to the right until it can be lifted off the base. This will allow you to clean the grinding wheel. NOTE: Never use water or liquid for cleaning the lower grinding section of this appliance.
  2. Clean interior recesses with a soft brush (not provided).
  3. Wash the whole bean chamber and lid and the ground coffee chamber and lid in mild detergent and water. These items are only dishwasher safe on the top rack of your dishwasher. Wipe exterior with a damp cloth. Do not immerse mill in water or any other liquid or place in dishwasher. Use only non-abrasive cleaners to remove stains.
  4. After completely drying, replace whole bean chamber. Important: when replacing whole bean chamber, screw on completely before setting grinding rate. Turn chamber clockwise (as viewed from top), until it will not turn. Fill with whole coffee beans for grinding and replace lid.
  5. Replace ground coffee chamber and lid, making sure it snaps securely into place.

No coffee is coming out of the machine...

in our machine we wanted a stronger coffee so we adjusted the auto grinder (where the coffee beans are housed) to the finest setting thinking the finer the grind the stronger the coffee...after doing this the machine wouldnot make coffee...we sent it away while still under warranty and the tech said that the grind selection was too low so they just turned the grinder back up a notch and it worked fine ....dont know if this will help but it's worth a try!

Generally, coffee beans are oily and form a goo in these machines.  You may get lucky by first unplugging the machine, getting some copper wire (#14 or #12) and poking around in there to loosen the crud up.  If this doesn't work, the unit will have to be disassembled and cleaned.  Messy!
