An external reader is the best solution. It will transfer the images way faster than using a cable connected to the camera. See if there is a setup option in your camera that chooses the SD card only for storing photos. If there is, then select it.

Communication error

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use ZoomBrowser or any other photo cataloging program.

When connected to the PC the cameras display will blank out, this is normal. If the cameras "Communication" setting is set to "Normal" you can only download images when the cameras drivers have been installed of the bundled CD. If you change it to "PTP" (Picture Transfer Protocol), you can connect it to any computer without installing drivers. Set the camera into playback mode, press the menu button and navigate into the menu with the tools(setup). You will find it there. Good Luck!

Error in connecting the digital camera

i had this problem for couple of days, until i started googling this problem. I started to reread this instruction manual. If you have a communication error on the camera screen. Make sure the the USB port you are using, is a working unit. If it is, more than likely the port is not inserted correctly. Keep fiddling around with it until the message goes away. I would also turn the camera on and off to double check and make sure.
