When installing a digital timer switch into a 3-way lighting circuit, you typically have to install a jumper wire across the "travelers" on the 3-way switch at the other end of the circuit, in order to get the timer to function properly, otherwise the switch operates erratically, as you've experienced

With an Intermatic brand timer, the jumper is included with the timer switch, usually it will be a small, about 2-3 inches long wire with fork terminals on each end.

You should have the power turned off before installing the jumper. Also, there is a distance limit (75-80 feet of wiring) as to how far apart the two (2) switches can be from one another, in order for the timer to work (with the installed jumper).

Normally, the travelers are one the same side of a 3-way switch, but you can use a voltage detector to confirm which wires are which (prior to turning off the power) to make installing the jumper easier. If you contact the manufacturer of your particular timer, they can email you a owners guide/installation pamphlet that shows the proper installation procedures for your timer switch.

If want, you can use the link below to contact Intermatic to get a spare users guide for your particular timer.

Hope you find this Very Helpful and best regards!

Replacing 4 wire 3 speed fan switch with 3 wire 3 speed fan switch. Is it possible??

No it is not going to. If it does then why did they use the four wires in the first place? Duh!

If you cap the ground wire nada will work - if you cap one of the wires going to a motor winding, that speed will not work.

INtermatic Model ST01 timer is to be used in a 3 way switch arrangement. The unit works in one switch position but fails to allow the light to turn on in the other switch position. Several other switches...

ST01C timer replaces one 3-way switch and the other 3-way switch remains.
The ST01C timer does not work exactly like a 3-way switch.
When the timer blue and red wires are connected together, they reverse whatever program is in effect.
When the timer is wired for single-pole, the red wire is capped off. When timer is wired for 3-way, the red wire is used to reverse the timer, thus causing the 3-way effect.
So if timer is ON, and red and blue wires are put together, the timer turns OFF.
That's why the remaining 3-way switch has to be rewired.
The remaining 3-way switch is rewired so it will connect and disconnect the red and blue wires, causing the timer to reverse program each time, and creating 3-way effect.
Other requirements of ST01C is that the black wire must connect to Hot wire, and the blue wire must always connect to Load. This means that you have to correctly pick which 3-way switch to replace, where the hot wire from breaker arrives.
Open following link for wiring diagram showing how to wire for 3-way:
http://waterheatertimer.org/ST01C-program.html#ST01C
All 3-way timers require rewiring second 3-way switch to create 3-way effect.

1 -3 way sw installed with a 3 way dimmer without a load, test voltage on wires for light to make sure sw is working properly. with sw on 120V,sw off 100V?? why the voltage with sw off? All new wiring.

Hi,

You will always have voltage through the black incoming wire unless you turn your circuit breaker off. This wire will be attached to the common terminal on the switch. Is this what you were testing?
The power comes in the common terminal and then is switched through, or on, and broken, or off, when the dimmer is clicked. Therefore, there is always power coming into the switch.

Hope this helps, if it does, please place a vote for me. Thanks,

Cannot get the decora 4 way light switch to work - 2 of the 3 switches work but cannot get the 3rd to work. Replacing regular toggle switches which all worked but wiring different for decora switches.

Decora 3-way and 4-way switches do not wire differently than toggle-type switches.
Instructions below are tedious but will accurately guide you to solution.

Let's break down the problem starting with 3-ways.

1) Start with 3-way switches:
Old 3-way switch has 2 brass screws and 1 dark screw
New decora has same color screws.
Wire that went to dark screw on old device must attach to dark screw on decora device.
Other two wires can attach to either brass screw.
Wires that attach to brass screws are travelers ... these wires travel to the 4-way switch.
So there are 2 traveler wires at each 3-way switch.

2) Let's test if 3-way switches are wired correctly by taking 4-way switch out of equation.
We will resolve problem with 4-way switch after 3-ways are correct.

There are 4 wires at the 4-way switch.
These are the 2 traveler wires that arrive from each 3-way switch.

At the 4-way switch, 2 wires arrive in one cable, and 2 wires arrive from another cable.
To say it differently, there are 2 wires from cable1 and 2 wires from cable2.
Connect 1 wire from cable1 to 1 wire from cable2 with a wire nut
Now connect the 2nd wire from cable1 to 2nd wire from cable2 with another wire nut.
So now the traveler wires are connected, and the 4 way switch is out of equation.
Turn on power, and click 3-way switches to see if both switches turn lights on-off in all positions.

Do your 3-way switches work correctly?

3) If 3-ways are not correct, then you have wrong wire connected to dark screw.
First thing to check is if you can identify traveler wire colors by looking at wires at 4-way switch.
Remember, traveler wires at 4-way switch go back to 3-way switch and connect to brass screws on 3-way switch.

4) If you cannot tell traveler wires by looking at 4-way switch, then you can try different combinations until both 3-way switches work.
Or you can test: disconnect wires from one of the 3-way switches. Separate 3 wires for testing. Move other 3-way switch to down position. Turn on power. Test each wire to bare ground wire. Mark wire that lights up. Now move other 3-way to up position. Test each wire to bare ground wire. If same wire lights up each test, then that wire goes to dark screw. If different wire lights up, then mark that wire. The two marked wires are travelers, and they connect to brass screws. Other wire connects to dark screw. Repeat identical test for other 3-way switch.

At this point your 3-way switches will work, if light bubs are not burned out.

5) Last step, the 4 way switch.
Remember from step above, that 2 wires arrive in cable1: These 2 wires connect on one side of 4-way switch. The other 2 wires that arrive in cable2 connect of other side of 4-way switch.

3-speed fan switch broke on Hunter model 28072, cat. 300 fan. Found replacement switch at Lowes, but wiring colors are completely different from manual. What color wires go into L, 1, 2, 3 positions...

My Hunter fan uses a Zing-Ear ZE-268S6 switch. This is NOT a standard switch! It connects L to 2 AND 3 for medium speed. It is best to order the exact switch if possible. Hunter wants to sell you the entire bottom assembly (probably expensive). I found the exact switch online at:

http://www.kenselectronics.com/lists/switches.htm#Pull%20chain

for $6.80 plus $4.95 shipping. I bought an extra which didn't increase the shipping - worked great. Hunter ZE-268S6 ceiling fan connection colors: L=black; 3=green; 1=grey; 2=brown. If you need a different switch on their page, just click the Edit menu, then Find, type your part number in the box, and click Next.

When I hook up a new timer it starts to make a clicking noise and the lights do not go on. I have put in 2 different batteries and the timer still makes a clicking noise. The light timer is for a 3-way...

Your wiring is probably wrong.
Wiring is tricky for 3-way timers.
First of all, both 3-way switches cannot be replaced with timers ... just one of the two switches is replaced.

You don't say which timer you have.
Since I know the wiring and the timers, let me jump in, and you can add a comment, and then we can work further.

A) You have battery-operated ST01C or EJ500.
Here is wiring diagram for Intermatic battery-operated timers:
http://waterheatertimer.org/ST01C-program.html#3way
Note that at all times, the blue wire has to go to load, and that the blue wire connects to dark-colored screw on 3-way switch.
Note that the remaining 3-way switch is not wired the same as before. The red and blue wires have to be wired exactly as shown, and the wiring might require additional wire running between the switches.
Now add a comment with your wire colors and description where you are in the wiring.

B) You have Aube timer with rechargeable battery.
T0132 manual shows wiring diagrams
http://waterheatertimer.org/Aube-T1032-timer.pdf
Below is image of typical Aube wiring.
The manual shows one other diagram depending on which switch is being replaced.
The important this is note that the wiring on the remaining 3-way switch requires a jumper wire from the dark-colored screw to the brass screw on other side of switch. But it has to be the same brass screw that goes back to Aube timer #1 wire.
Usually this little difference solves the 3-way switching problem, but add a comment any time.

Need a replacement, where do I get one?

If I understand correctly you have a 3-speed fan.
And you need a 3-speed replacement pull-chain-type switch

Lowes carries 3 speed fan switches in the light fixture department.
These switches have multiple wires.
At any given time, there is one-and-only-one wire that connects to power from wall switch.
Lets call this the Power wire.
As you pull the chain, the power passes through the switch and goes to one-and-only-one of the other wires.
The other wires connect to windings in the motor.
The different motor windings control fan speed.

The key to replacing the switch is recording where each wire went before you disconnect old switch.
Once you know which of these wires is the Power wire, then you can test other wires with a continuity tester.
You also know the pull-chain sequence is OFF - HIGH - Medium - Low
Mark wires in fan and mark wires on old switch.
Pull out old switch.
Use regular electrical tester to find which wire in the fan is the power wire (separate wires, turn on power and test each wire to metal part of fan)
Now test the switch wires.
The switch is out of the fan.
You marked the wires so you know which wire is power wire.
Put the continuity tester on the power wire.
Test power wire to each of the other wires.
Click the switch and test to each of the other wires. Mark which wire lights up continuity tester.
Click the switch and test again. Mark which wire lights up continuity tester.
Click again, until each wire is marked in the sequence.
When you click the switch and no wire lights up, then that is the Switch OFF position.
Do the same test on the new pull-chain switch.
Connect the wires to match your testing.

I am replacing the 3 speed fan switch in a ceiling fan. Upon removal of the old switch (due to a cracked/broken screw port), I noted the secific wire and color that was located in each of the four...

Use a continuity tester on old switch.
There will be 1 main wire that connected to power >>> power flows through this wire to the switch and feeds the other 3 wires > each time you click switch, power will flow to one of the other three wires

The do the same test on new switch. Match up wires accordingly.

If you don't have a multimeter, buy inexpensive continuity tester at hardware store.
Continuity tester is basically a flashlight battery and flashlight bulb that lights up when the circuit is closed

3 speed fan switch

Zing Ear ze208s switches are NOT all the same - the actual switch wafer on the back varies significantly. Some are single-pole making contact with 1, 2, 3 one at a time, others make contact in combinations. Like L123 for high, L1&2 for medium, and L1&3 for low. The number stamped in the center of the back may indicate the difference. I have one with a "4" that is one-pole at a time, and another that is a "21" and makes multiple contacts at a time.
