Question about RTO Atwood DSI-RV Water Heater-6 Gallon

1 Answer

My rv water heater ignites, I have a steady flow of water in the sinks from the hot water spicket, but no hot water. The bypass valve is positioned paralllel to the cold water valve. I am not sure of the water heater brand, but is in a 2005 Sandpiper made by Forest River.

IF THE HEATER RESEMBLES THE ONE IN THE PICTURE, ITS AN ATWOOD, OTHERWISE ITS A SUBUBAN. ANYWAY, HOW MANY BYPASS VALVES ARE THERE? IF ONE OR TWO, THEY WOULD BE INLINE TO THE WATER LINES. IF THREE THE OUTSIDE 2 ARE INLINE AND THE MIDDLE ONE IS JUST THE OPPOSITE.

If your lighting and not getting hot water then you have a valve closed or your by pass is in the wrong position, if it is burning on gas it will heat water

Where do I find the bypass valves for the hot water heater tank on a Jayco Eagle HT 27.5RLTS RV?

best advice is to find a Jaco distributor and talk with a service man as they have the diagrams or experience to fix the unit
look for a panel at the position out side the van where that unit is as there may be a removable section ( screws or pop rivets) that is the access to that unit
there are plenty of jayco sites around the country

Boiler won't ignite for hot water unless heating is on.

If this is in a RV the propane monitoring valve may require more gas flow to turn on than the water heater requires. A central heating system requires substantial gas flow so when the monitoring valve opens to fire the central heating, there is enough gas flow to also fire the water heater.

No hot water coming out of tap but we do have cold water out of cold water tap...any suggestions??

Check your by-pass valve(s) at back of water heater. Water goes in cold to bottom fitting, and out hot at top fitting, so those 2 valves ( if any) need to be open, anything in between needs to be closed. There are a few different by-pass set-ups, so if that doesn't explain it, get back to me with a description of your valve set-up and I'll guide you through it. If valve(s) are all in proper position and still no flow through hot line, I'd suspect faulty check valve in between hot line connection and tank.

Have a 2005 coach w/Atwood DSI-RV 6 gal water heater. Gas lights, heater fires and gets hot, but doesn't transfer the hot water through the lines to the sink faucets. jwmystery@aol.com

You need to check by-pass valve(s) on back of tank for proper position. You need cold open going in to bottom tank fitting, and hot open at top. If any valves in between those 2 lines via "T"'s, turn them to off position.

Try opening the pressure relief valve (carefully so you don't burn yourself) slightly, and see if water comes out and if it is hot. It sounds like you may have very little if any water in there. Check by-pass valves at back of water heater for proper positioning. Cold should go in the bottom, hot out the top. Make sure there is flow through any valves going into bottom, and any valve at the top.Any valves connected in between the hot and cold should be in the off position. If need be, to test if incoming cold water getting into tank at bottom fitting, shut off water, relieve pressure in system by opening taps until all pressure is gone. then close all taps. Now remove your drain plug, then turn water back on, and water should shoot out the drain plug hole with good pressure within a few seconds and flow steady while water on. If not you have a restriction such as valve in wrong position or faulty, so try moving valve to get better flow out drain plug. If flow out drain is good, then make sure valve at top fitting on back of tank (if any) is also open for good flow . Any other valves should be closed in between those 2 lines. Let me know what you find.

I have a 1994 pop up with an Atwood water heater. I hear the water heater turn on when plugged in but no hot water.

Have you checked your by-pass at rear of water heater to make sure it's in proper position? If it's still in bypass, you will only get cold water from either tap. Cold water goes in bottom, and hot comes out top. Any valves in between those 2 lines need to be off. Let me know what you find, as they use a few different ways to do the by-pass.

The first question is this
From the outside of your RV is the water heater square or is it longer than it is tall?

If it is square it is a Suburban
If it is longer than it is tall then it is an Atwood
Forest River mostly uses Suburban

How long do you let the unit burn/run before you try the hot water? From a cold start it will take - depending on the outdoor temp. & the gallon size of your water heater, 15 to 30 minutes for the water to get hot.

If you have waited this long then I would suspect the bypass valve is in the wrong position

Hot Water Heater in 1991 Pace Arrow RV is not working

If you look on the outside of the RV, you will find the vent for the water heater behind and access door. There usually is a drain plug and valve located as well. Generally they will be tucked away under the kitchen sink area with internal access as well. You will need to find where the valve that shuts the water off to the unit is and turn it on. Most times the water heater is either electric or propane. But sometimes they are only propane. Once your find the access door, you will know where the water heater is. You can also contact Fleetwood who makes the Pace Arrow to see if they have any information on your unit. Usually your unit info or trim number will be located on a little plaque right by the entrance to the RV. You will need this when you contact them. Hope this helps.
