Question about Craftsman 21 Hp 42" Deck, Ys 4500 Lawn Tractor

2 Answers

I have an 18 HP Craftsman tractor (model 917255980) that will not start. If i remove the fuel line from the carb, gas does not run out freely, hoever, by applying suctin on the line gas does flow breifly. Is it possible fuel pump is bad? Or could it be something else? Was running good 2 days ago then started cutting out especially when mowing at full throttle as if it was starving for gas. I replaced fuel fileter and plugs.

I took off the gas line at the Carb and blew into the gas tank, gas did flow freely. However, placing the gas line back on and trying to start it yeilded the same result of not starting. The fuel filter is new and I can see there is no debris in it.

instead of removing the pipe, (which I would think you mean after the pump) can I just remove the hose on the carb and try it?

The pump is not good,to test it,you take out the out fuel pipe start the engine ,see if fuel is coming out fully to the pipe,if sometimes it comes and cut, this means the fuel pump is not working properly. You have to change it.

Try this instead of applying suction try blowing very hard it sounds like your filter is blocked in fuel tank

Test for spark. Make sure the air filter is clean. Then make sure fuel is getting from the gas tank to the carb. Old rubber fuel line deteriorate and stop up small ports and parts in the carb. An inline fuel filter is a good idea on these larger engines. Sometimes, a larger B & S engine needs the OH valves adjusted to start easily and run properly. If after attempting to start, does the new plug get wet or even smell like gas? You should always use gas LESS than 30 day old. Gas goes stale like bread and milk. You can remove the fuel line from the fuel tank at the carb to drain old gas. You can also remove the carburetor bowl to check for water and sediment (which need to be cleaned out). Check these things and post back.

Craftsman riduing tractor turns over but won't

If you have spark and compression, the only thing left is fuel.

Check that fuel is being deluvered to the carb (remove fuel line to carb and make provision to catch ejected fuel. Crank engine. Fuel should be pumped from the tank and out the open line at a good rate.

If this checks out (or there is no pump fitted, but there is fuel issuing from the pipe), check the electrical connector on the bottom of the carb. There should be battery voltage on this conection for the engine to run - if not - that's the problem.

If that checks out, the cut-off solenoid (fed by the connection you just checked) is suspect.

Changed battery, filled it with gas. Gas not getting to engine.

Remove fuel line at carb and see if gas flows freely.

If it flows freely and the carb is dry either the float is stuck closed or your electric fuel solenoid is unpowered/broken. The solenoid is under the carb. You can see a wire coming out of it. Unhook the wire and check it for power using a test light. If the light turns on with the key on you can remove the fuel bowl and solenoid and test the solenoid and inspect the float for free movement.

Also, make sure your fuel filter is clean and your inline fuel valve wasnt closed accidentally!

Craftsman 19.5 HP Briggs and Stratton engine. Will not start. will start with starter fluid and then stalls. It appears no gas is getting to the carb.

disconnect fuel line from carb and crank engine. NO FUEL-check in-line fuel filter, kinked line, trash or water in bottom of fuel tank. FUEL- gas is stale, has water in it, or carb has sediment in bowl, bottom jet or idle jet.or float could be stuck shut.

I have a craftsman gt 6000 with kohler 18 hp magnum today it started fine and ran goodd for over an hour i put gas in it and ti would not stay runing it stated surging and popping and cuts off

Your carb is full of trash. you also probaly need to clean out the bottom of your fuel tank, blow out your lines and replace the fuel filter. I have 2 mowers with kohler engines and clean out the fuel tanks fuel lines and carbs 1 time a year. There is also a fuel shut solenoid on the carb this is normally problem if the engine does not run. but I am certain your problem is a simple fix, all you have to do is clean everything out in the fuel system.

No Gas

Most probably the carb restricted by varnish, trash or rust. Need to clean carb. You'll probably see the problem when you remove the bowl.
