Question about HP Mini 1000 Netbook

5 Answers

My HP Mini won't reboot.

I tried to turn on my netbook but all I got was information telling me to "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key" but I can only select one boot device. However, this device doesn't seem to be working, because I just continue to get the same screen. It's "Network: Atheros Boot Agent" and it's the only one listed. I don't have CD drive either and I'm in Thailand. I'm only a 16 year old girl on exchange and I have no clue what to do. It won't reboot so I can't see anything on my computer. There's no start menu or anything so I can't even use it. I'm freaking out and I'm scared that I broke it, but I can't ask anyone for help here because they can't understand a word I'm saying.

Okay, so I got to the BIOS setup, but I didn't see what you're telling I need. The main tabs are: Main. Security. System Configuration. Diagnostics. Exit. I don't know how to check if the Hard Disk is detected, but under Diagnostics I see this: "Primary Hard Disk Self Test Not Support" so I don't know if that means it's loose or not.

Mine says Change Boot Device Order, but I'm guessing it's the same thing. So, then I get a little window that says "Please select boot device:" The only thing listed there is "Network:Atheros Boot Agent."

So, if I just go into a computer place, they'll be able to fix it? Does it take long?

The hard disk cable seems to have got loose. Get into BIOS setup and check if the hard disk is detected. To do this, look for a hint in the first screen that appears with the HP logo. Mostly it will be F2. Hit it before the screen goes off. The main screen will show the devices attached to your laptop. Check if the hard disk is detected(see against the text named Primary Master). If yes, go to Boot tab. Under it see for Boot device priority and select that. Under it make sure your Hard disk is set as the first option.

Guess the Hard disk cable is really loose. Can you list me whatever you see in the main tab?

  • Amruth Louis Sep 06, 2009

Sorry, just cross checked with my notebook. Hard Disk is never listed. Can you do me one more favour? When you get the HP screen, tap F9 (this has to correspond with 'Select Boot device'). Check if something called 'Notebook Hard Drive' appears in the list.

  • Amruth Louis Sep 06, 2009

Okay. Your Hard disk cable is loose for sure. You can get it fixed at a HP service centre. Or any other service centre as it is just the cable.

  • Amruth Louis Sep 06, 2009

Yes. Even if you cant explain them, it shouldn't be a problem. Once the switch it on, they'll know. And it doesn't take much time. They'll open the back casing/panel that covers the hard disk, and reconnect the cable. As simple as that. If you're bold enough to take the risk and handle it carefully, you can do it yourself. Else get a professional hand. Please do rate if I was helpful. Have a good day.

I had the same problem. I could use the Pro IV PATA ZIF RunCore SSD via the USB enclosure, but I could not use it as the internal drive, as the BIOS would not recognize it.

Notice that the correct orientation of the ZIF ribbon cable is such that the SSD faces down inside the HP computer. Whatever orientation you use when inserting the ribbon cable into the SSD (contacts facing you or facing down), you must use the opposite orientation when connecting the other end of the ribbon cable to the inside of your computer.

I did this, but the BIOS didn't recognize my drive... UNTIL I tried again with the opposite cable orientation from the one I was trying. It appears that the contacts MUST face down on the connection inside the HP Mini, but can face either way when connecting the other end of the cable to the RunCore SSD. After I changed this orientation, the BIOS recognized the RunCore drive and the computer now boots fine.

Verify BIOS settings and see if the harddrive is listed. If it's not then the harddrive maybe bad. Or, insert the set-up disk in the CD driver to see if it will boot that.

either your hard drive has been damaged or it has been disabled by the bios. Your netbook probably has a solid state hard drive. You need to get your information removed from the drive at this point and get the operating system of your choice installed. For further assistance, you can call us 24/7 at 800-595-3564.

Sounds like the hard drive went bad, hard drives will click away when the platters are touching each other.

Take the hard drive out and see if the clicking is still there, if it is the motherboard at that point cause the sound is built onto the motherboard.

If the clicks go away after taking out the hard drive then you know the hard drive is definitely bad.

select drive "c" as boot device, reboot and if it doesn't boot, then the hdd may be corrupt. if you can get to the hdd recovery setting, use this to reboot to factory spec.
