Question about Compaq Presario Notebook

1 Answer

Laptop only displays image on 2/3 of lcd screen.

The image is complete, another words it's not cut of by the blank right side of screen. The image looks like it was just pushed toward the left side leaving it looking somewhat compressed and distorted like it looks when you set an older lcd, with a native resolution of 1024x768, to 1280x800. The windows desktop for instance looks distorted, round icon will look oval shaped because the aspect ratio is not right. This laptop displays this distorted image right from the moment the machine turns on so it's not the resolution settings in Windows, and an external display works fine when attached to vga port on the back. This is a Compaq Presario R3000 laptop.I've tried swapping memory and cpu but no effect. I am going to try a different lcd on it and or try it's lcd on a different laptop but haven't got the resources to do it just yet. I've spent several hours searching for some one with similar problem with no luck. So if anyone knows what this might be I'd sure appreciate any input that might be helpful. Thanks.

As I said this distorted image using only 2/3 of viewable screen appears as soon as the laptop is turned on. So when it goes through the POST it's in this condition, which tells me it's not the windows drivers as windows hasn't even begin to load yet. Any other ideas...

Just forget about windows for a minute, how can I make this clearer. OK if you boot from an old dos floppy disk the screen will look the same, pushed over to the left 2/3 and blank on the right 1/3. I've run linux live cd's and when completely booted to gui like KDE or GNOME it looks the same, changing resolution has no effect on the problem. I have installed windows on at least 200 laptops and never seen this problem before. It's not a common problem nor a common solution. The solution maybe simple but it's really stumped me on finding it. I suppose the ATI gaphics chip could be bad, but why would the external monitor work. I've updated the bios thinking maybe it was corrupt but no difference. Also the lcd works fine on another machine, although I still haven't tried a different lcd on this presario, just don't have one laying around at the moment.

Try installing the latest video driver. Download it from the HP WEB site and make sure the video driver matches Windows XP or Vista that is installed on your laptop.

I have installed Windows on quite a few laptops (I am a computer volunteer at Technical Aid to the Disabled and prepare and install Windows XP on laptops for disabled people), on quite a few laptops I have found during the installation process the display has not filled the whole screen until the video driver has been installed and the screen resolution adjusted.

Backlight working but Display still blank, what could it be?

If you connect an external monitor to the video port on your laptop, power up the monitor first and then boor up the laptop and the video information will automatically display on the external monitor. This will indicate the on-board video is functioning OK and the problem is the video connection to the LCD screen.
The video connector from the LCD screen may need reconnecting to the motherboard to restore video information on the LCD screen.

Hi, my hp dv2000 screen is blank when I turn it on. It hums and lights up like it's supposed to, but the screen is completely blank! What do I do?

Look at the LCD screen very closely and check if you can see a faint image on the screen. It's possible that the LCD lid close switch stuck in the "closed" position and the back-light stays off even when you open the LCD screen or turn on the laptop. The switch turns off the back-light when you close the LCD display to save the laptop battery power.

If that didn't fix it then there are 3 things that could have gone wrong:

1. Video cable connection from inverter to LCD got loose. To check this, follow instructions from step 3 on how to open the LCD and check if cable is fitted properly.

2. The video inverter is faulty
The screen inverter failure is very similar to the back-light lamp failure. In both cases the screen gets very dark and the image on the screen becomes very faint, barely visible under a bright light. If it's still under warranty, take it for a replacement. You can replace this otherwise - you can find the inverter under the screen, follow the procedure described at point 3 to open up the screen.

3. The LCD monitor is faulty
If it works on an external monitor most likely the LCD is faulty and needs replacement. If it's still under warranty, take it for a replacement. If not, you can do it yourself, it's pretty easy. Remove the rubber covers on the side of the screen, unscrew the screws take the plastic cover off, disconnect the video inverter and put in the new LCD after you connect the video inverter to it.

Has a Toshiba Tecra 9000 won't power up. Power light on front is blanking which appears to be a code 3-3-2

The problem is cause due to one of the following: the backlight or the display, check your monitor brightness settings. Sometimes your brightness may accidentally have been all the way turned down, resulting in a blank/dark screen. The monitor controls are on the keyboard, directly above the numeric keys.
Look closely at your laptop's screen if the steps do not restore power to it and if it remains blank. Can you see a faint image on the screen? If so, the backlight may be off due to the LCD "lid close" detector malfunctioning. This malfunction likely happened due to the lid close switch being stuck in the "closed" position even though the lid is open. The switch is located beside the LCD's screen hinges, and tapping the switch a few times should unstick it.
Use an S-Video cable and plug your laptop up to an external monitor, such as your television set. With the laptop and TV hooked up, turn both on and see if your computer's desktop is displayed on the TV. You can also use a fifteen ( 15 )pin monitor desktop monitor by connecting it to the blue fifteen ( 15 ) connector at the side of the laptop if you cannot see anything on screen it is the display problem. If it is, your laptop's display needs to be replaced. If not, your motherboard and/or video subsystem may need to be completely removed and replaced.

Trying to run monitor from my lap top and goes in to autoconfig and I see my desktop, when autoconfig is complete, I get blank screen.

In general more info is required, but most likely this is an issue with your display settings. Try the following:

1) Try pressing the Fn and Display buttons (at the same time) on your laptop. Try it once, twice, and then a 3rd time.

Chances are that your laptop is displaying in a resolution that is not completely compatible with your monitor, so when the display settings are switched from laptop LCD and montor, to monitor only, the resolution should adjust automatically.

2) If that doesn't help you, try lowering or adjusting the resolution on your laptop. If in XP, right-click on the desktop and go to Properties, and select the tab for display settings and adjust it. If in Vista/7, right-click the desktop and select Screen Resolution/Display Settings and adjust it there.

Good luck. Let us know what happens!

The display turn white >>>what can i do?

Laptop LCD screen turned completely white
What can you do if the laptop LCD screen turned completely white? From my experience I can tell that this problem may be related to the following:
1. Loose connection between the video cable and the LCD screen.
2. Defective LCD screen.
3. Defective motherboard (I assume the graphics card is integrated into the motherboard).

When you turn on the laptop, it starts but the image on the screen is completely white right from the beginning.
Most likely you still can use the laptop with an external monitor. Just connect the monitor to the VGA port on the back or side of your laptop and then switch the video output from internal to external mode.
On Toshiba laptops you can toggle between internal and external screens using Fn+F5 keys. Hold down Fn and press on F5 until you get video on the external monitor.
On IBM laptops use Fn+F7.
On HP laptops use Fn+F4.
It’s possible that you have to use a different key combination on your laptop but you get the idea.
On some laptops, in order to be able to use the external monitor, you have to connect it to the laptop and then restart the laptop so the external monitor is detected by the laptop.
I noticed that in some cases the laptop screen may turn white because of poor connection between the video cable and the LCD screen. If you want to check this connection, you’ll have to take apart the display panel because the connector is located on the back side of the LCD screen.
I always check the video cable connection first. Reconnecting the video cable may fix your problem.
If reconnecting the video cable doesn’t help, most likely you have a problem either with the LCD screen or with the motherboard.
The best way to find out which one is causing the problem is testing the laptop with another working LCD screen. Without this test you’ll have to guess because as I mentioned before this could either bad motherboard or bad LCD screen.
You’ll have to disconnect the video cable from the LCD screen and the inverter board. After that you connect another working screen and test video.
The original screen is white but my test screen works normal and I can see the image. After this test I can tell that the problem must be related to the screen.
After I assembled everything back together and connected the original LCD, it’s still white.
CONCLUSION.
In my case this problem is related to the LCD screen and it has to be replaced.

Blank Display, using exernal monitor, can see display info w/flashlight, display flashes light at startup

You could have a defective screen - a defective inverter or a CCFL lamp.
To determine if you have a LCD screen or video card problem, read this and follow the instructions.

Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom:

  • Screen flashs on red/pink and off.
  • Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal.
  • Picture flickering with dim display.
  • Picture flickering on and off.
All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp

Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.
