Question about Garden
Murray 4.5 hp Q lawn mower runs rough and puts out some white smoke. But, about 2 minutes before running out of gas the motor smooths out and runs great. How do I adjust the carb?
White smoke indicates that it is burning oil. The smoke would be black if it was running rich. So probably the rings will need to be replaced eventually. These mowers are prone to problems but the carbie is least likely to be the problem. So before you adjust the carbie take the cover off the top and give it a good clean and check that all the hoses are connected and are not cracked. Then make sure the airfilter is clean, blow it out with an air compessor or better still get a new one. Then try it out agian. If this doesn't help there is two screws on the carby marked L and H. Turn these only 1/8th of a turn at a time and note or make their current position. Start with the H scew with the mower at full revs. Turn anti clockwise untill you get max revs then turn it back a bit. Running too lean will over heat the motor and damage it. Then if needed adjust the L (or Low)screw. If you get black or grey smoke when you push the throttle up from idle to full its too rich so turn clockwise. If if slows before it picks up to full revs turn anti clockwise.
