Frig keeps overloading circuit breaker, just repaced relay

My Kenmore frig was not cooling, and the compressor would not kick on. A tech. replaced the starter/ overload relay on the compressor, which got everything working again. Eight hours later the circuit breaker was thrown and won't reset. The compressor was very hot and after it cooled down, the breaker still won't reset. Please help!!!

I think the compressor has a problem with its internal running coil , or it's grounded. To check it you can disconect the power to the compressor and then turn on the breaker , and if doesn't tripped the breaker ,you know the compressor is bad.

Comptrssor cuts off wont start

Michael,
If there is a loose connection to the compressor via the start/over load relay (normally attaches directly onto the compressor), or if the start/over load itself is bad the compressor will not run. Best way to tell is via gauges but I doubt your frig has ports. Check to see if your compressor is getting really hot. Could be bad start/over load relay or bad compressor. Try unplugging your frig for say 30 min then, with your hand on top of a cool compressor, plug the frig back in and see if compressor smoothly vibrates for at least 5 min without becoming very hot or shutting off. I suspect the start/overload relay is bad and causes a high amperage draw which will then cause the over load to kick in. This start/over load relay will normally be right on the compressor and any decent appliance parts store will have a replacement.

Try unplugging your frig for say 30 to 40 min then, with your hand on top of a cool compressor, plug the frig back in and see if compressor smoothly vibrates for at least 5 min without becoming very hot or shutting off even though fan continues to run. When the start/over load relay fails, it can apply power to both the compressors start coil AND it's run coil at the same time for to long and it very quickly causes and over load situation. I bet your "Starting Components" (start/over load relay) are bad. Any decent appliance parts store will have what you need. Just take in the make, model, and serial number of tour frig.

Hi!
A relay starts the compressor with a higher voltage and then quickly kicks out
It does a lot of clicking (trying to start over and over again)
If thats what is happening with yours
Its best for a tech to replace The relay but you can do it
Take your model number to your Local Appliance parts store they will have a diagram
showing you how to install the relay. Its called a hard start relay
I use part no ERP410 POWER START RELAY, CAPACITOR AND OVERLOAD all in one. (110 v)

Cat number ED25TEXHW00, side by side, Whirlpool Refrigerator. Neither fridg or freezer will cool. Lights turn on & condens fan runs. Compressor will not kick in. What to look for???

If the compressor will not kick on what you have is either a bad compressor or a bad starting device. Generally the unit will try and start and after 8 seconds or so you will hear a loud tick. That indicates the relay is bad. If the compressor is bad it will usually make a loud humming noise.

The start device is plugged into the side of the compressor. Unplug the frig. You can simply take off the wires to the start device (remember where they go!!!!!) and pull it off. You have two piece, the overload and the relay. The relay is the piece that is most likely the problem. Some machines will have these put together in a white plastic block. You can shake this entire piece and if you hear loud rattling it is broken. Sometimes the relay is visibly burned and blacked where it plugs into the compressor. Anyway, if you do not have this white plastic relay/overload combo, the relay is a brown square shaped plastic piece. Shake it and see if you hear rattling. If not, chances are very good the relay is ok, and the compressor is locked up.

Compressor changes are expensive and unless the frig is extremely nice and cost a pretty penny, they aren't worth fixing. Relays and overloads should not break $100 for the parts, and any tech should be able to change one in under 10 minutes. So if it's a relay fix that puppy! good luck :D

P.S. In a RARE occasion the frig may use a capacitor, and the capacitor may be bad. The only way to check is with a multimeter or replace the capacitor and see if it fixed it. This is highly unlikely and therefore not checking from the beginning.

My freezer is not freezig and the refrig is not getting cold. There is a notice coming from what I assume to be the compressor in the back of the refrig at the bottom.

Check Relay and overload on compressor terminal. sometimes due to faulty relay overload tripping which makes tik tik sound. before replacing relay need to start compressor directly.

Kenmore frig freezer will go to 20 degrees and stay there

sounds like either the compressor is out or the relay that starts the compressor is out. I would try replacing the relay/overload on the compressor and hope for the best. if you have a continuity tester then check from each of the 3 posts sticking out of the side of the compressor that the relay/overload push on to fo one of the copper pipes coming off the compressor..no continuity is good if you get continuity then the compressor is shorted and ruined

Not cooling, compressor kicks in for 3 seconds then back out

No the PTC relay on the compressor is bad. Need to replace it.

First be sure to unplug frig. Remove the cardboard cover that covers most backs of the frig units. Remove the plastic cover that is on the side of compressor. It is held on with a metal clip. Now you should be able to see the relay pry the relay straight off. note the wiring and position of relay. Only three prongs on compressor. Go to a parts house for appliance's and with your make and model number should be able to get a new one. Let me know if you need any more help. ken
